Merged Dutch MP to be charged for "hate speech"

As a dutch citizen myself I think this trial is overdoing it. While I in no way agree with the man or condone his policies he has the right to his opinion as does everyone in the Netherlands.
Of course, should he ever come to power I'm afraid those rights will be rapidly removed from anyone disagreeing with him/following the wrong religion as Wilders seems to favor freedom of speech for him alone.

Change the word(s) Islam/islamic for Jew/jewish in his party program and they'd be banned for being antisemitic.

But that's just my opinion of course. And given our system of government I doubt he'd ever truly run the country as he wants.
 
And then there is the fact that it gives the likes of Wilders the opportunity to play the "Matyr For Free Speech" card, and I don't want to give them that.

Yes, Wilders is an Über-Fascist who is going to assassinate anyone who disagrees with him after his accent to power.
After banning the newspapers which disagree with him he will start with some anti-Muslim pogroms which will end with the 'final answer to the Muslim question'.

People are discussing if Wilders is a good or a bad guy, if he is telling the truth or not.

If only nice people who are speaking the truth have the right to speak, there is no freedom of speech.

A large amount of the people arrested in my country for religious hatred stuff have been football fans from the 2 major teams. Catholic and Protestant bigotry.

People from other countries can moan and bitch all they want but we are quite happy with living in a country where stuff like this is unacceptable and people can be prosecuted. Other Europeans are quite happy with it in their countries also. It does not make us better than you, nor does it make you better than us. Get over it.

Yes, it does. Countries where there is freedom of speech are better (in that respect) where countries where it doesn't exist.

That some people are satisfied with it is no argument for censorship, just like the fact that a drunkard is happier than a sober man is no argument for alcoholism.

Not some, most. Free speech is like chocolate. I like the British version better than I like the US version. I do not feel the need to cry like a little girl about it though.

It's rather curious, isn't it, how the people who spew the dirty lie and bigoted propaganda about Islam being violent just happen to have to walk around with a bodyguard to make sure, you know, no unfortunate accident happens by someone who is an "isolated extremist" who just happens to be a Muslim.

Fail. Wilders' body guards are not tied to him being MP. Remember Hirsi Ali? She stepped down as MP, and didn't lose her body guards as a consequence.

(well, she lost them after she moved to the US, but that's because she moved out of the country - she'd get them back any time she decides to move back to the Netherlands).

I mean, holding that kind of disgusting view publicly is practically like wearing a "kill me" sign, isn't it? Strange sort of thing, considering Islam is a religion of peace.

The relationship between this trial and tolerance or liberalism is like the relationship between the White Rose trials and patriotism.

In both cases an idea that is innocuous in itself (one should love one's country, one should tolerate people different than oneself without bigotry) had been transformed to the point where any whiff of criticism against the government's policies is "non-patriotic treason" punishable by beheading, or any whiff of criticism of people from other culture is "hate speech" punishable by jail time.

This would have been funny if it weren't so serious.

By the way, this evil racist bigot, about to pay for his evil non-multi-culti thought crimes any day now, is apparently the most popular politician in the Netherlands. I know, I know -- "popular" doesn't mean "correct", of course, but does anybody really believe that about half the Dutch, of all people, are evil racist xenophobes who should be in jail for agreeing with Wilders?

Or is it OK to think like him, as long as one does not say it?
