"The idea of secret banking cabals that control the country and global economy are a given among conspiracy theorists who stockpile ammo, bottled water and peanut butter. After this week’s congressional hearing into the bailout of American International Group Inc., you have to wonder if those folks are crazy after all."

These people are bankers, they run banks and get paid enormous amounts of money for it. Because they are rich, they can influence a lot of other powerful people. Unfortunately for your CT though, they don't all share a common agenda; different bankers want different things. They are constantly at each other's throats trying to get more for themselves and cutting out the opposition. That's no way to run a conspiracy.

If all you are saying is that rich people in our society have more power than poor people, then yes, I suppose that's true. It's not fair and it's not nice, but money exerts influence and until we come up with a better system we're stuck with it.

You want to stop rich people from having a big influence? Then all you have to do is make poor people stop wanting to have more money. If money was worthless no one could bribe anyone.

Want to change the world JJ? - Start inventing that universal replicator like they have on Star Trek, until we have one of those we're stuck with having to pay for stuff. Good luck!

I used to be one of those people. I was nuttier than a fruitcake.

The ones who didn't get out, still are.

I wonder why this banking conspiracy/global banking cartel/what have you overlooked Canada. No bank bailouts here, no bank collapses, just a stable and secure financial system. No big subprime mortgage mess, no huge collapse in house prices.

Indeed, the Canadian banking system was rated the best in the world by the World Economic Forum.

I guess we never got the cartel/conspiracy memo...

Canada is already a socialist hellhole, nothing left to loot there. The queen owns everything.

"The best way to rob a bank is to own one."

You aren't from Czech Republic, are you?

Because here it not only applied to banks but any company. Large number of companies were completly tunneled out and destruction of economy by bad gov combinated with falling banks and few other idiocies...

I suspect we had largest number of tunnels and most certainly biggest impact of them.

this is another example of the difference between a possible criminal conspiracy, and a conspiracy theory.

what went on with AIG, Bank of America, and Merril Lynch, has nothing to do with an evil NWO octopus, but just greedy men getting together to pull off a big swindle.

I am a Jew. Therefore....I control the world!!!

worship me!!!

no your not. Your just a living organism standing on the big blue marble flying thru space. You can define yourself with any amount of words but they mean nothing.

Noh, You're no.

All words and punctuation mean something.

Funny that this -- the first couple of lines -- is the only part conspiracy theorists ever quote of that paper. Nobody ever quotes, say, this bit from near the end:

Now, I’m not saying Congress should be meddling in interest-rate decisions, or micro-managing bank regulation. Nor do I think we should all don tin-foil hats and start ranting about the Trilateral Commission.

Then again, rhetorical devices are pretty complex in that people don't always intend their words to be taken literally. And if the tinfoil crowd ever gets that, I'll be the first to say 'Maybe there's a God after all'.
