"American Idol" producers are eager to hire Howard Stern to replace Simon Cowell as the show's tough-talking judge, sources tell Page Six.
An insider said that producers of the hit Fox show say Stern, America's highest-paid radio personality, is their top choice to take over from Cowell, who leaves at the end of this season. They approached the King of All Media after he repeatedly mentioned on-air that his exclusive Sirius XM Radio deal expires next January and he was open to other offers. Cowell was paid $50 million a year.
A source connected to "Idol" said, "It's one of the few shows that could compete with Stern's $100 million-a-year Sirius contract, and 'Idol' bosses think he'd be even nastier than Simon.

American Idol - :tombstone

So the plan is to move American Idol off of broadcast TV and onto cable TV? I believe he can pull of being mean and cruel well enough... but the sexual commentary might be a bit besides the point of American Idol.

I've never liked Howard Stern. He has always struck me as the absolute epitome of the talentless hack who gets notoriety based solely on being shocking and outrageous.

Now then, is anyone going to show us their boobs in this thread?

Kinda like Glenn Beck, only without the crazy.

What, you want a picture of the guy?

He would ensure that contestants could only make it through if they were willing to ride a Sybian.

Howard Stern is no replacement for Cowell. That's a terrible choice.

They should try to get David Cross.

I thought the permanent/main judges were supposed to be people who've worked in the music industry and know something about what they're talking about, leaving only the "guest" spot for people with no such experience/training. Why would they replace the former with the latter? Do they just not want the show to be about music anymore?

While I'm at it, how do they settle it when an even number of judges splits their votes?

Actually, I kind of like Howard. He's funny and smart and usually right on the money.

As for him being an Idol judge...heaven help those poor, poor kids. They are in for a world of pain.

I do find the idea of Howard judging the Idol crowd delicious, though. :D

One of the many problems I've had with the show is that, actually, Simon isn't nasty enough. He's not harsh enough. If he was a real music critic, he'd say "You know what? All of you are painfully mediocre! Even the top three of you! None of you are going to be the next Elvis or even next B- Elvis or C- Elvis- and I'm not even a fan of Elvis! The competition this year should be cancelled because of lack of any credible talent! Let's face it, the only reason people watch this is for the drama of seeing a contest, not to hear music. And this show totally blows! What a commercialized, pimped out cheese fest! This show is so cheesy! None of you can sing, commercials for Pepsi and Toyota abound, Ryan is a waste of time, the phony sob stories are shameful, Randy has no idea what he is talking about, Paula doesn't even know what she's talking about and even my "judging" makes no freaking sense! I'm no critic or judge! I'm not really funny! I just tell people who can't sing that they can't sing! I'm not even witty about it! What in the world am I doing here?!".

That's honest and truthful criticism.

I don't watch American Idol, so I don't have much stake in this, but...

Cowell, Jackson and Abdul are all seasoned music industry pros, as it the new one they brought in. It lends an air of integrity to the proceedings. The addition of DeGeneres starts the downward slide to judges who aren't in any place to judge. Stern, though I used to like him decades ago and he certainly has great talents, is a TERRIBLE idea for a judge. This is not his venue. As a matter of fact, I don't even believe the story. "Sources tell Page Six," is more likely than not to mean it's not true.

Five reasons why this story is nonsense.

1) Stern doesn't do anything without Robin Quivers, so she would have to be on the panel as well.
2) Stern became irrelevant when he went to Sirius Radio.
3) When Stern married Horsetrofsky, he joined the ranks of the types he made a living ridiculing.
4) Stern lost his credibility as the honest shock jock when he aggressively campaigned for Senator Kerry for POTUS.
5) Stern knows nothing about music.
