Australia

Yup. I know exactly where you mean.

We seem to have a bit of a shared experience. I worked for Yellow Express in the early seventies, before I joined the Army.

In fact, that's why I joined the Army - to get out of Sydney.

Cool!! I worked for Allied. I remember Yellow Express and All Purpose Messengers being top guns at the time. I used to bridge jump for Allied. The stories I could tell you....the stories

Well I was just listening to radio5 live uk. They are reporting on the owners of that ditty sueing the band " Men at work", for plagarism, regarding their 80s song "land down under" Got to cough up $20million apparently. All to do with the flute being a dead ringer for the original.

Aparently the flute solo waS added by a new member of the band who has no writing credit on the song and that it was that alone thatl cost the band much dosh.
I heard part of that story this morning also! I was online to look up how much they'd have to pay, but got sidetracked here first...and now I don't have to do my own research.

I also heard that there's an appeal to be heard fairly soon, and it may be overturned.

Actually, I do have to do my own research, because I can't actually remember the tune to the original song (I probably haven't heard it in close to 50 years), and I want to hear it to hear how much alike it really sounds.

I wonder if the band could make the argument that they were searching for a song that would be universally identified as Australian, and therefore it was a cultural thing, or something.

The orange bits are equivalent questions. I slanged.

:)
Oops!

I think it's a replay of the George Harrison/My Sweet Lord fiasco. They won't have to pay.

After nap time, I'll organise a side-by-side comparison for you to listen to.

Can I ask a big favour, Cobbers, and Cobberettes?

There's this thread in Community, called 'teh Pith Poll' and I was just kinda wondering . . . well . . . you know. :)

If you vote for me, I'll post a nice big picture of your favourite subject and host it for a year.

I think it was more to do with the Flute solo than the song structure. The Bands singer was commenting that when they wrote the original version (1978) It had no Flute solo, it was added when the Flute player became a member of the band. He had no credit on the released record.

Shame I wont be able to listen. The sound has gone on my comp! No idea why.

Going out to feed the Birds in the aviary now, Lots of hungry squeaking Zebra Finches. Bloody straylians. too noisy. :D

It's bloody silly really. The notes themselves are very close, but the way that flute is played is a completely unique style and far more identifiably Australian than the rarely-heard Kooka song.

Lawyers suck.

We have a flock of them in an aviary on the back verandah. We call 'em 'Meeps' because of the noise they make when they're going about their finchy little business.

I'll grow up eventually.

Another vote for you. :)

Legend.

Post your computer sound problem in the 'Computers etc' sub-forum and Akky's Audio Help Desk will be on the job before you can say Tangambalanga.

I must admit, I was surprised when I heard about the Grammy.

I don't normally take much notice of industry award wank-o-ramas, but beating Metallica and Linkin Park for the award is no mean feat, and speaks pretty well to how popular they must be.

I wish Bon Scott could have been part of it, the silly sausage.

It speaks pretty lowly of Metallica that they're not even considered Metal anymore (Best Metal Performance was given to Judas Priest for Dissident Aggressor, and Mettalicas old "friends" Megadeth were one of the nominees).

First time anyone's blown other people up in this country since the Hilton bombing.

Weirdly, no one has ever been convicted. It took eleven years for charges to be laid on two members of this fruitcake sect but the evidence against them, provided by a police informant was discredited and the charges were dropped.

The chief witness against them then confessed and was jailed but released because his confession was ludicrous. By that time it was 1997 and everyone had given up.

However, one graffiti artist had an idea, and his/her best guess as to the perpetrator can still be seen on a rocky outcrop in Booth St, Annandale.

One of my friends would never had been born had his mum not taken early lunch that day.

None of 'em are a patch on Ritchie's Rainbow.

ETA: Although JP are pretty damn good.

Done (that was funny, but now I've got that blasted song in my head). Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, in a singlet, please.

I couldn't decide . . .
