Haitian earthquake was used as an excuse for US invasion

Yep.

Haiti is the key to postponing the Zombie Apocolypse. Invading it is the wisest thing our Government has done since "We the People".

Oh, joy Pilger. The same guy who said saddam was a good guy as well as Milosevic not being so bad.

This is John Pilger, is a respected journalist. He has twice won Britain's Journalist of the Year Award, and his documentaries have received academy awards in Britain and the US. (Damn no URL allowed again just type out his full name without a space then .com)

Admittedly he sees beyond the establishment media spin, that's why I thought his views would be interesting.

There is no academy award for most accurate documentary.

Being new on here I was hoping there would be some balance to the discussion. Whilst, I am not firmly convinced of an overt conspiracy by the West, the facts would appear to justify some criticisms. Has anyone established any rational reasons for the massive military build up, and the pathetically slow response? Bear in mind the US are very nervous about any Latin American country having leftist leanings since it encourages others. With elections due soon and the democratic leader Aristide exiled a revolution doesn't sound too far fetched.

With regard to potential wealth, I'm not too sure Haiti is that poor. Read

US = Americans

Do try to keep up.

No, US = The nation state and those who control the functions of the US State.

Americans= people who live in America, who repeatedly show themselves to be generous and altruistic when natural disasters strike humanity.

Pilger is FAR from a reliable Source. And he didn't win any awards for accuracy. Besides, all his documentaries consist of is how america is the ost evil nation on earth.

No, they don't.

The response has been swift. The soldiers we have sent (who are largely unarmed) are the only readily available, qualified, organized, and deployable labor force we have to do the job. The rational is obvious.

An impending communist revolution in Haiti? Yes, that does seem far fetched.

Oil in Haiti - Economic Reasons for the UN/US occupation

There is no chance that the US could possibly recoup the cost of its intervention, much less make a profit by this intervention. There is no economic reason for intervention. This is a conspiracy theory based on nonsense, and an intentional refusal to acknowledge facts.

Did you actually read the article you refered to? It's ridiculous. A quote:

There is evidence that the United States found oil in Haiti decades ago and due to the geopolitical circumstances and big business interests of that era made the decision to keep Haitian oil in reserve for when Middle Eastern oil had dried up.

This makes no sense. It makes no sense why the conspirators would have waited, and it makes no sense that now would be the time to act. Why now? Why not when we sent our military forces there in 2008? or in 2005? or in 2004? Or in 1994?

And how, exactly, does this intervention make it any easier to establish an oil industry in Haiti? Do you think an offer by the conspirators to develop oil fields, refineries, and shipping facilities in Haiti would be met by anything other than celebration by the Haitians?

If the US were in the business of stealing oil, why are we not taking it from Iraq?

And if there was oil in Haiti, why haven't the Haitians exploited it?

They waited for the earthquake, silly. Waiting out an earthquake makes it so much more fiendish. Of course there hadn't been one over there in 200 years, so I guess they finally caught their break. Imagine their relief.

Or maybe Perseus thinks like Chavez, that this earthquake wasn't natural?

Right. I can't believe I forgot that we cause earthquakes now, too.

I think with that Nation State (what other kind is there?) remark, someone's Anarchist slip is showing.

So you have your own special definitions for those two words. How nice for you.

This just appears to be yet another "something significant happened so there must be a reason" conspiracies. As mentioned, Haiti is of minimal economic, strategic, or political importance (for a cite, see the last 200 year history of Haiti). There is no reason for the US to invade. In addition, this method of invasion is not precisely militarily optimal. We're using doctors to create beachheads now?

Overall this conspiracy theory gets a D-. It's not compelling, not particularly evil (unless the US caused the earthquake, then it's cartoonishly evil), and really only interesting at all due to being topical. By the time the US forces pull out and the media moves on to the next tragedy all the theorists will be on to the next whackiness and forgotten about this one.
