iPad Reactions

Is there some reason why this device must be as capable as a desktop, a notebook, or other tablets? That seems to be a common attitude. Why can't different devices be intended for different purposes? Can somebody please explain this mentality?

Because some people don't want to carry around several different devices.

Then don't. Use the right tool for the job and stop whining that a particular product isn't suited for your purposes. Chances are it's probably not intended for you anyway.

As I'm sure others will and have pointed out:

This is a massive failure of a device.

For $340, I can get an Eee PC with a 250gb HDD, 1.6gHz Atom, and have it be of similar size. And I can change the OS. And it can multitask. And have a better widescreen. And have 3USB ports.

For $420 I can get one with a 32gb SSD.

It's practically a pointless device.

and of course AT&T only. sorry but At&T networks suck.

$829 for a fully fleshed out version?

Sorry for that much, I can get a laptop that can read books through PDF, play games, surf the net, do email, and play farmville on facebook; have 4 GB of memory with a 260GB hard drive.

For you ...

No, for most.

For the pricing, and the functionality, you're better off with either an iPod or a laptop.

Seriously, the device doesn't even have flash. Or a camera. Or anything actually worthwhile.

The only thing I can see saving this device is if the developers come through and offer something worthwhile on the AppStore. But I'm not counting on it.

Where am I whining? I pointed out some things that were missing that many people were expecting. Jeez, relax and don't get so defensive. Don't worry. They'll sell millions of them.

At $500 it is cheaper than I thought it would be but still overpriced for it's capabilities although I am sure Apple fanboys will still be buying them in droves.

watch in three months when they dont see sell thrus going as well, they will drop the price...like they did with the iPhone 3G.

My apologies. I did not mean to imply that you personally were whining, but that people in general are. A great many of the complaints about consumer products are the result of people simply not being the targeted audience and being ignorant of (or resistant to) that fact. I see this a lot with Apple products.

So because you personally don't see a use for it, nobody else will either?

Well, the question then becomes, how do they define its core use, and are they great at it? If they can't define the space in which they shine then they end up having to do a bunch of things not-as-well.

It would be a near-mistake to refer to it as a "Tablet". This ain't nothin' like what tech-folks are accustomed to calling a "Tablet PC".

As long as it is marketed merely as "an extra-large iPod Touch", I can see some folks buying it.

It is a niche product for those who want to either: Watch movies on larger screen than an iPod; or read books without a separate device.

And, as such, I suspect it might sell fairly well.

But, it is pretty weak to be called a "Tablet".

Agree about AT&T. I don't get why Apple would give AT&T exclusives on all their hot new wireless products for several months.

And I agree that you can get a laptop with very similar functionality for less. But I think Apple's strong point continues to be the cleanness of the eco-system - that iMac and iPod and iPhone users will be able to use this immediately and flawlessly with their existing devices, that they know how to use it out of the box, and that the whole back-end iTunes and App Store (and now iBook) storefronts will work with all. I'm sure you can do this all with Windows laptops too, but I give Apple credit for making my wife and kids feel confident about doing all of this.

That said, I'm still not sure why I need one.
