Huh, when did warantless wiretapping become illegal again in the U.S.?

The real horror will be having to hear lefty crow about this. I predict 50+ posts by him on this thread alone! :)

Why target Mary Landrieu? Isn't she quite conservative?

IMHO it should be legal for a citizen to secretly record their conversations with all politicians/public employees.

Might cut down on demands for bribes and other corruption.

I could be wrong, but I don't think it is illegal to record your own conversations. I think the issue here is that they were trying to record other people's conversations.

It is unclear from the article. And the law varies from state to state, so I am not sure. There are some states in which you cannot record even your own coversations with others.

I stand potentially corrected. Is there any question that wiretapping someone else's telephone calls is illegal?

Aggghh, this will likely be all we'll hear about O'Keefe from now on. At least he made a big splash when he could.

Ironically, the FBI discovered about it whilst they were wiretapping O'Keefe.

What's the over/under on the number of times he will refer to some woman as a slut?

On the actual arrest, it sounds very serious. This is not about recording one's own conversation; this is real wire-tapping. If the charges are valid, these people are in a world of trouble.

ETA: FBI press release here.

Once inside Senator Landrieu’s reception area, FLANAGAN and BASEL told a member of Senator Landrieu’s staff that they were telephone repairmen, and they requested access to the main telephone at the reception desk. FLANAGAN and BASEL then manipulated the telephone system. FLANAGAN and BASEL next requested access to the telephone closet because they needed to perform work on the main telephone system. They were directed to the main office of the United States General Services Administration, also inside the Hale Boggs Federal Building, where they again represented themselves to be employees of the telephone company and stated that they needed to perform repair work in the telephone closet. Both FLANAGAN and BASEL stated that they had left their credentials in their vehicle. In addition, the complaint alleges that O’KEEFE and DAI assisted FLANAGAN and BASEL in the planning, coordination, and preparation of the operation. The men were apprehended by the United States Marshal’s Service soon thereafter.

It's illegal in Illinois to record your own conversations, unless all parties give permission.

If that's true they should definitely go to prison.
