On Friday, El Al and IDF planes came into Haiti, carrying 250 medical personnel -- doctors, nurses, lab and x-ray technicians and even a psychiatrist -- and supplies for a mobile hospital, including a pharmacy, a surgical unit, and a maternity ward. A young Haitian mother who was the first to deliver in this ward, early this morning, named her baby Israel.

You can see footage of an IDF rescue team at work in Haiti here:

Members of ZAKA, the Israeli ultra-Orthodox volunteer rescue organization, were on the scene as well. Yesterday, on Shabbat, they labored, digging in the rubble of a collapsed multi-story university building, where cries were heard. After hours of effort, they succeeded in pulling eight students from that rubble, alive.

These ZAKA members then took time, in the midst of the chaos, to wrap themselves in their tallitot (prayer shawls) and recite their Shabbat prayers. Undoubtedly most if not all of the Haitians on the scene had never seen such a sight.

When the men had finished praying, a crowd of people gathered around them and kissed their tallitot.

According to one report, head of the ZAKA mission, Mati Goldstein said:

"With all the hell going on outside, even when things get bad Judaism says we must take a deep breath and go on to save more people.

"We did everything to save lives, despite Shabbat. People asked, 'Why are you here? There are no Jews here', but we are here because the Torah orders us to save lives…"

It is also important to note that there have not been any reports of the arrival in Haiti of any "Volunteer Rescue Organizations" from: Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Syria, Pakistan, Libya, Morocco, Jordan, Kuwait, or any of the UAE's.

Why is that?

Why is that?

Maybe because most professional rescue and aid organizations - like the ICRC, Medicines sans Frontières, Oxfam, etc. - are international organizations and don't necessarily distinguish where the aid is coming from. And they certainly don't waste their time on praying to a bronze age superstition.

I note you left out Qatar. Is that because you got your arse handed to you in your previous thread about alleged Jewish superiority when it comes to giving aid, with an example from Qatar?

Anyway, you might want to read the Arab Times:
KUWAIT CITY, Jan 17, (Agencies): Local institutions in Kuwait have started conducting relief operations for Haiti earthquake victims. Some have collected donations, while others are organizing various charitable events to help the victims.
In a press statement Sunday, KEO International Consultants revealed its employees have pulled their resources together and collected over $64,000 for the victims of the earthquake which struck Haiti recently.
KEO is a regional architecture, engineering and construction management firm with offices in many Arabian Gulf cities.
Or Al Arabiya:
The UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) will begin aid flights to Haiti with two planes loaded with tents, Abdul Rahman al-Taniji, manager of RCA's media and public relations department, told IRIN.

On 19 January an RCA team will fly to the Dominican Republic, neighboring Haiti, to buy food supplies worth U.S.$500,000 for Haitians, he said.
[...]
The Khalifa Bin Zayed Charity Foundation will dispatch by air 50 tones of emergency supplies for survivors, which is expected to arrive on 19 January, according to Khalil Mohamed, media representative at Khalifa Foundation.

can't the Israelis be proud of their heroism without rubbing it in?

why do they have to bring politics into this? if their ONLY goal was to save lives, the lack of help by Muslim states would not be of any concern.

one must now ask, "are they there to help people...or to make a political statement?????"

Correction: You have not bothered to look for any reports of the arrival of any aid from those countries, so you assume they do not exist.

Are you suggesting to look for evidence which may contradict preconceived notions? Heresy!

And seriously: it took no more than 5 seconds to google for "kuwait haiti aid" to turn up those links I gave. And many many more.

excuse me, but you have failed to grasp the point of the OP.

Jews good...Muslims bad.

Jews send hundreds of rescue workers and doctors to Haiti and donate millions to the relief funds. Meanwhile, Muslims donate zero money and send zero rescue workers.

Always remember and never forget: Jews good, Muslims bad.

what are ya, anti-Semitic?

;)

How many Arabs are IN Haiti giving relief?

How many dollars can you drink?

At this point the US and the major aid agencies can probably deploy enough people. Equipment is more of a problem and equipment costs money.

A Qatari C-17 aircraft, loaded with 50 tonnes of aid, left for the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, on 14 January. Qatar also sent a 26-member rescue team comprising soldiers, police and medics to set up a field hospital and provide assistance wherever they can.

Qatar Charity (QC) will send an assessment team in the coming days to assess the needs for the rehabilitation phase of the disaster. The team will be followed by a consignment of non-food items for survivors, Issam Adwai, QC director of programmes, told IRIN.

[...]

A Jordan Royal Air Force plane carrying the components for a military field hospital and six tonnes of food, relief items, medicine and clothing from the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation went to Haiti on 14 January. The field hospital includes five physicians specialised in orthopaedics, general surgery and anaesthesia, according to local media.

A second military plane carrying Jordanian medics and medical equipment headed to Haiti on 15 January.
I'll look for information about their arrival.

EDIT: Here's one article about Qatari aid arriving: http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/unusual-attitude/2010/01/that-qatari-c-17-turns-up-in-h.html

Bickering aside, you have to admit it's a cute story (the mother naming her baby after the country giving them aid). Agree they should be able to deliver aid without spreading their religion, though.

Absolutely. More power to ZAKA. Had he left it at that, I doubt anyone would've said anything.

What I object to is this bit:

Why is that?
The implication is that the Arab countries are not contributing, while Israel is - ie, Israel good, Arabs bad.

Turns out the assumption this is based on is 100% bogus, which makes this little more than run-of-the-mill racism.

Why? It's part of who they are. Also, I find your "spreading their religion" to be a bit thick in assumption.

The story tells us that they are adhereing to their religious tenets, not that they are looking to proselytize.

"Hi, we are here with some food, and over there is where we trim off your foreskin."

Not happening.

This is true. Ironically, it's also the way Jesus taught people to spread Christianity: Do your good works and pray quietly and people will see what you do and flock to you. And it worked magnificently, originally.

There's that ancient quote about how working with lepers and the sick without a care for themselves was immensely attractive.

It's the difference between being told something, and seeing it function successfully in action. I think Randi has more success demonstrating actual psychic tricks and how they have mundane, if clever, explanations, than reams of hot air talking about it can.

"Some 50 tonnes of emergency supplies are also on track to arrive on February 19, funded by the UAE’s Khalifa Bin Zayed Charity Foundation."

Will anyone be alive by Feb 19th?

No boyntonstu. Obviously the entire population of Haiti will DIE by Feb 19th, so they won't need anything AT ALL then.

It's nice that your crusade continues irrespective of facts.

Oh, and the 15 IDF workers compares to the 26 man team from Qatar, the two planes of supplies from the UAE, etc.

If you want to smack Saudi Arabia upside the head, go right ahead. Saudi Arabia and Iran are two nasty repressive governments without a lick of compassion between them.

Also, the aid to the victims in no way deters my criticism of elements of Arab culture. But to say or imply that they don't care or aren't human like everyone else? Absurd.

You apparently are completely unaware of the fact that the relief effort is likely to take months, if not years.

The intellectually honest thing to do would be to admit you were mistaken and get on with your life. Instead, you're ignoring any information which doesn't back up your preconceived notion that Israelis are helping while Arabs are not.

"Hi, we are here with some food, and over there is where we trim off your foreskin."
Now, that sounds more reasonable. If someone saves me from starvation, it only makes sense for them to get a little something to take home and remember me by.
