I sort of caught this programme a few nights ago, but I wasn't watching very carefully. It seemed to be examining a conspiracy theory that bin Laden is dead, but the US authorities want to pretend he's alive for some reason I didn't totally grasp.

I was expecting to see a thread on it, but nothing has appeared. Did anyone watch it? Has it all been discussed in earlier threads?

I suspect that link won't work unless you're in the UK or can use a UK proxy server, so if anyone knows of another place to watch it, please post the link. The link above also runs out in a few days.

I mentioned it in passing here a couple of times & saw the programme, too. It's on Youtube now: http://www.youtube.com/user/MarkAbare#p/u/9/2X3mqVZe21Y

It's basically a response to David Ray Griffin's book, where he seems to be suggesting that the US is only in Afghanistan to find bin Laden, so must continue to pretend he's alive. Of course the reality is the US said from the very beginning that "this is really not about Osama bin Laden; this is much broader than that", but then Griffin's well used to ignoring inconvenient truths.

At one point when I looked up there was a picture of what looked like a comedy parody in a false beard, and they were saying "this image has been widely ridiculed", and I thought, well, I can understand that! Then the complaint was that all "appearances" were being acknowledged as authentic, including some that looked distinctly fake.

I should have a proper look at the programme. As far as I recall, the format is that they spend about the first three quarters of the programme building up the conspiracy theory then the last quarter knocking it down. (I just started to doubt them after seeing the Lockerbie one, where they did a fair job of pointing out the problems with the conviction, then in the last segment trotted in David Shayler to assure us that he knew that the right person had been convicted all along!)

While the black-beard picture looked very very fake, I'd have thought that if the CIA or whoever wanted to fake appearances of bin Laden they could have done a better make-up job than that.

Incidently, the producers' blog on the BBC website is, as always when dealing with 9/11 twoof, filled with fairly amusing comments.

ETA: I especially liked this bit:

.. I wonder what encyclopaedias he/she reads! :|

Oh, that is good! That last comment is Stundie-worthy. I'll need to watch the programme properly.

I see Robert Baer is considered to be a credible and reliable source in this context. That's interesting.

Put all speculation to rest. I can guarantee without any doubt whatsoever that Osama Bin Laden is, indeed, dead or alive.

Respectfully,
Myriad

Yes, here's one that trots out Griffin's essential idea:

OK let me give you a scenario, if we get the news tomorrow that Bin Laden is dead, then do you all free thinking people that 'the war on terror' will come to an end? Of course it would. Its in the benefit of the U.S and UK that Bin Laden remains alive even if he is dead because there will be no justification for the occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Absurd, even by truther standards.

Is the picture in question from a video, or an actual photograph?

That poster is a regular. He / she was a big part of the big 9/11 blog-comment-extravaganza after their last 9/11 conspiracy show. Also notable in his contributions, JREF member SteveAustin.

ETA - I just noticed this, but the "truther" comments almost all have at least one question in them. It's an interesting pattern, this "just asking questions" routine.

The BBC are going to try and tell is Bin Laden is still alive?? What next for The Conspiracy Files?

When was ObL last seen alive by anyone remotely reliable Mr Rudin?

Some people here should ask: Who murdered Pat Tillman?

Try Sibel Edmonds for one! At great personal sacrifice she has brought the real story of the CIA and AQ out into the open. Now I do I trust her rather than a bunch of lying neocons?

it's a fake you say?

'until Americans invented one for him'?

Have you checked who handled the security at the WTC? Google "WTC Security"
Lots of questions out there.

You know, I'm not sure. I wasn't watching with any great attention, but the pantomime villain beard struck me as pretty funny when I glanced up. I need to watch it again.

Bin Laden is probably off masturbating in cave somewhere in the middle east
laughing at the rest of the world arguing over whether or not he is dead or alive
