Naked Scanner Fear

Are we sure that's a real scan, or did they just take a pic of a naked women and invert it to create the scan? The pics I've seen from scanners don't show hair on the head. Everyone looks bald, even women.

Steve S.

Considering the source (prison planet), I think that's a fair question :)

I'm thinking it's a real picture just because the inverted picture, while looking quite lifelike, still seems fuzzy and missing a few details.

Still, it's incredibly sharp considering...

How is that photo a breach of privacy? Could someone look at it and say "yes that is <some celebrity>?" Then give information that is not known to everyone? About the best it could do is maybe say if a person has had a breast enlargement.

Dude.

You don't think someone nakifying you doesn't violate your privacy?

They can see your privates!

:P

Can the image be saved, and if so, who has access

As I mentioned, you can save it with your own camera/camcorder/cell phone. Just snap your own pic of the hottie being scanned (or little kid, you sick

Breach of Rule 10 removed.

If the image is not saved, what if someone gets through the system, how will we check how they did so?

Good question. How will we check our votes in those digital voting machines, while we're at it?

If people are happy to have this naked picture taken, if they y'know have 'nothing to hide', should we just put a camera in their bathroom and bedroom too? If they have nothing to hide...

Well, that's why I ask if this is woo or not. The slippery slope in vogue right now is that the next thing we'll see is scanners everywhere. In schools, in bars, etc.

I would have to say that the greatest victory that the terrorists could hope for is to scare us so much that our governments will resort to such methods as this, and that we the people will accept and allow it.
While I completely agree with the rest of your post, that particular sentiment -- "If we allow our government this or that infringment on our liberty, terrorists have won!" -- always struck me as a non-sequitor. I doubt there is a single Islamic terrorist anywhere in the world who thinks "Infidel Americans are forced to take off shoes and surrender nail clippers! We won!"

I have to say that the line has already been crossed. In the absence of any evidence that a particular person is up to anything untoward, one is now compelled to submit to any of a number of highly intrusive search methods in order to travel by aircraft. By any rational interpretation of the Fourth Amendment, one cannot be compelled to submit to what amounts to a virtual strip-search unless there is very clear reason to suspect that that individual is guilty of a crime, or is about to commit a crime.

You are not compelled to submit to a virtual strip search. You are free to choose not to travel by plane.

That's one of the more persistent legal arguments anyway.

I've taken an image used in this report: http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2010/jan/04/new-scanners-child-porn-laws and inverted it (placed it in a NSFW tag just in case you are in a very restrictive environment):

I'd say the image from prisonplanet appears a tad more detailed....

Thank you! Now the question is where the heck they got THEIR picture from. Are there multiple machines? Which ones are being bought? Maybe the media is taming some of the pictures for the press.

Update: Following the links provided by Calculon I've come to this page (warning, naked models, not porn)

Starting to sound like woo. Is Alex Jones really that desperate that he'd take a common stock photo, invert it, then claim it's from the scanners? Then again, the CTers in the prisonplanet forum are, themselves, calling the picture "disinfo", which may be quite right as it turns out. So could just be hasty reporting and poor fact checking, which isn't terribly surprising.

HOWEVER!!!

The debate continues, forget that particular picture. These scanners are SO new age, I have no idea what to think of them yet. At the moment I do NOT approve of them. I agree that airports need to be secure, but hell, we might as well all get on the plane naked and get dressed when we land. Why don't they just put us all under and wake us up when we land?

OMG.....

The actual real scanner image was edited by mods!
You can click on it, but it is a real image generated by some body scanners in use at airports....and JREF thought that was too NSFW.
And that is what the TSA says I should feel ok about using.
And as technology advances, they will only get better.

I will take the pat down, thank you very much.

(I posted the the photoshopped images as a link rather than an image as it was a real naked person...and treated it as such)

I nominate the JREF mods to run airport security :)

I'm pretty sure that the people who get the job of looking at these things will get de-sensitized very quickly. It really doesn't bother me at all.

Heh.

Years of 'surfing the internet' hasn't de-sensitized me yet ;)

Breach of Rule 10.

True, but it's against the rules for them to have any kind of recording device in those locations. I guess if some tsa agent wants crappy porn more than their job though, they could sneak in a camera.

I disagree.

The point of them blowing up airplanes not primarily to kill a few random people. The point is to have a huge psychological impact on the rest of the nation. Hence the "terror" part. They most certainly must feel an air of victory, considering how many rights the terrorists have helped to erode in our once free nations.

They don't want to kill everyone. They want to convert everyone to Islam, either by charity (moderates) or by force (terrorists).

It's only a matter of time...

That's like saying shoplifting will never occur from employees because there's a rule against it. LOL

I tell ya, if I ever find myself going through one of these, I'm going to the washroom first to give it a few tugs and make it look bigger.

Not that I'm small or anything... just that flying makes me nervous.

This reminds me of a story.
Back in the late 1970s / early 80's there was a very pretty female security person at the heliport at Forus near Stavanger, Norway. Guys going offshore to the oil / gas rigs were subject to pat-down searches for whatever was banned back then - and the women did this as well as the men.
It was funny to watch how the length of the various queues varied, depending which gate this girl was working.
People were even known to stuff things down various parts of their clothing just to create suspicious bulges she would have to pat.
Not being daft, she was aware of what was going on and just treated it as a joke.

Flying was more fun in general , in those days.

Correct. They want to convert everyone to Islam. Eroding our right is not bringing that goal any closer.

Oh, you wacky American libertarians!

if it becomes clear I will be scanned when I go to the airport, I will simply put a very large zuchini in my underwear.

give those TSA agents the shock of their life!!!! maybe it will get me a few hot dates. hee hee.

:p
