Hey Stupid, It's Deism, Not Atheism

Deism (\ˈdi:iz(ə)m\[1] or \ˈdē-ˌi-zəm\)[2] is a religious and philosophical belief that a supreme being created the universe, and that this (and religious truth in general) can be determined using reason and observation of the natural world alone, without a need for either faith or organized religion.


No. I don't believe this. If that's deism, it doesn't represent me.

I became an atheist not long after I developed an elementary school fascination with comparative mythology. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that there were people like Gould and Dawkins who agreed with me. :)

Shorter OP: people who call themselves atheists are mindless sheep just following what some British academic told them to do. Instead, you should call yourself a deist, because Anthony Flew says so.

Having been brought up in a Christian family (though not Fundamentalist, by any means, both parents were science teachers), in my late teens I went through a phase of being an apatheist before much later acknowledging that I didn't believe in any god at all. I first read Dawkins for his books on evolution. Discovering that he, and many other authors who I respected for their science writings, shared similar views regarding god was encouraging, and reading his books on atheism helped to crystallise my views, but none was a factor in what I believe.

It is perhaps a reflection on the religious mindset that atheists are frequently depicted as following leaders, such as Dawkins or Randi, when in fact such figures are more like a standard to rally around, or a common reference point.

Well that word heretic cuts both ways. Any questioning of the Guide is suspect, next thing you will be denying the Doctrine of the Towel.

We not only take cash and credit cards but also first born sons and any excess daughters you may want to sell into slavery.
