I was recently contacted by a gentleman who was putting together a (positive) film about Kaz. He was in the process of getting national and international distributors when he found the StopKaz site and gave up on the whole idea. He sent me a DVD f the first cut of the film, and its trailer. It was mostly a film of Kaz telling her whole life story to a church congregation, intercut with actual footage of the attack on the World Trade Center. At one opint she mentioned that there was a web site which had been put up attacking her. she did not give the site's address, nor did she mention me by name, though she said that there were many agnostics, atheists and "fake Christians" out against her. She then asked the congregation "are you a fake Christian?" Perhaps it was her mention of my site which led the filmmaker to find it. he did not say. He was quite obviously relieved and grateful that the site kept him from the embarrassment of having released the film. Others would have been embarrassed as well: the pastor of the church gave Kaz a glowing introduction. And Rudy Giuliani (sp?) was interviewed in the film. not abuot Kaz, but about 9/11 in general. But I doubt it would have done him any good to appear in a film promoting Kaz's madness. So, while some criticized my focusing a site on Kaz, saying that she only had an impact on a small number of people: How many more would have fallen for her nonsense with an internationally-rleased film glorifying her lies? :eye-poppi

It's easy to forget the knock-on effects we can have.

I moved from teaching to science communication in effect because I thought I might be able to reach more people by making resources and writing than by standing in front of a hundred kids each year. Yet any one of those kids could go on to be the next prime minister, or a celebrity with a huge reach, or a scientist who discovers something significant.

Sometimes it's easier to believe there is more good in speeches before the masses than conversations with a stranger on a bus. But it's not always true.

A: Great!

B: What kind of film maker puts money and time into a project without doing the barest research??? Hopefully he learned from this experience.

He was probably a bleever before he started - that would be why he started.

I mean why would you make a film about Kaz if you didn't already think she was the bee's knees?

If he's got any sense, he'll re-edit and release it as a documentary about a hoax.

Who has criticized you for the website? I would say that with the inexpensiveness, and ease with the help of others, there should be sites to collect data about all of the charlatans out there.

Who is next on the list?

He should have started with you and used his Kaz footage to do a documentary on the anatomy of a con.

Nice work!

She may have only influenced "a small number of people" but those people gave her their hard-earned money and didn't deserve to be lied to.

Congrats, Robert!

BTW, Robert -- and off topic -- are you going to link that great video of Sylvia on the home page to your anti-Sylvia site. It is killer good.

I believe it was requested or suggested by the pastor. the filmmaker was a member of the church. and, as happened so many times with Kaz, "if my pastor thinks her story is true, it must be true!"

Verily, that rocketh.
Thanks, NZ!

Agreed. I would imagine that nearly as many people have been helped by my StopSylvia site via friends as have been helped by it firsthand!

Is she still claiming to have been married to a fictional younger brother of Mario Andretti?

Who has criticized you for the website?
There were those here who criticized my choosing such an obscure charlatan as a focus. And many (here and IRL) who said that Kaz's madness was so far out there, that it pretty much debunked itself. Still others said, in so many words, that anyone foolish enough to believe Kaz deserved to be taken, or were beyond reason anyway.

I would say that with the inexpensiveness, and ease with the help of others, there should be sites to collect data about all of the charlatans out there.

As I announced here a couple of years ago (and in my TAM6 presentation), I have sites planned fcusing on Peter Popoff, Benny Hinn, John Edward and Kevin Trudeau. The stroke has delayed progress on these, but they are still planned.

She again, in the film, mentions being married to a Roberto Andretti, but this time she let his supposed relation to Mario Andretti be implicit rather than explicitly named.
