No doubt she thinks people who study fruit flies are actually interested in fruit flies, rather than the window into genetics they model so well for us.

Well actually, in this case the researchers were interested in fruit flies qua fruit flies. They cause billions of dollars worth in damage annually to American fruit farmers (and rising, since new species keep getting accidentally introduced) and this particular research was directed to figuring out a way to get them to stop.

To quote the Californian representative who asked for the earmark:

The Olive Fruit Fly has infested thousands of California olive groves and is the single largest threat to the U.S. olive and olive oil industries. The research facility is located in France because Mediterranean countries like France have dealt with the Olive Fruit Fly for decades, while California has only been exposed since the 1990s.​

And this, says Palin, has "little or nothing to do with the public good".

The combination of profound ignorance, incoherent speech and utter contempt for anyone who disagrees with her is hardly attractive.

Palin made a series of vicious personal attacks on behalf of the McCain campaign (palln' around with terrorists) and since then has been willing to back almost any claim, however ridiculous if it makes her more popular with her base. Those are not the actions of a person of integrity.

When she makes a public statement, many if not most people appear to have great difficulty in understanding what she is saying. Her utterances are ungrammatical at best, at worst they are utterly meaningless stream of thought expressions of a mind that has rarely troubled to think much about anything.

I think it is very likely that the GOP will nominate her in 2012. With Huckabee out it is pretty much a straight fight between the Mormon and the moron. I can't see any other candidate that is going to interest the tea party base. And if Dobbs is running on an independent ticket the GOP might as well run Palin to get her out of their system, Dobbs is way more credible than anyone the GOP could field.
