How do you guys explain really bizarre cases of synchronicity?

The other day I went to work, forgetting my cell phone which is absolutely essential for me as a security guard.

A 10:57, an hour into my shift, the thought struck me like a lightning bolt. I forgot my cell phone! I raced home in my car to get it.

I got home a few minutes later. At the door, there was my wife with my cell phone in her hand. My boss had called on my cell phone and woken her up. She thought briefly about taking a bus to my work to bring it to me, but somehow she knew I was on my way home so she didn't bother.

I checked the call history on my cell phone. My boss called at 10:57.

Although I have not read the entire thread, I am shocked no one here was properly able to define synchronicity. It is not co-incidence.
Strange that you admit you haven't read the entire thread, but you claim no one has properly defined synchronicity.

We discussed the definition at some length. I cited Jung (who coined the term) and current usage to support the conventional definition (which is what Rodney is using), as opposed to those who claimed it's a word used to describe a subjective experience only (like deja vu) without being offered as an explanatory alternative to mere random coincidence or a theory of how the external universe actually works.

I further argued that the term is by definition self-contradictory.

It posits a sort of acausal connection. . . or a cause that isn't really part of causality, or at least intention or significance where there is none.

I pointed out that if we're talking about something that is merely a subjective experience, the word apophenia is more accurate--and those who would change Jung's definition (to the deja vu analogous concept) are effectively claiming that the terms synchronicity and apophenia are interchangeable.

And now it's time for another amazing paranormal psychic prediction.... (crystal ball is whipped out from its special secret hiding place under the counter, right next to the stash of chocolate. Somebody's been eating it!!)

We will now hear about the Type I and Type II errors yet AGAIN. And probably the Texas sharpshooter too.

Someone's been eating your crystal ball? :eye-poppi That's just rude!

I certainly hope you don't carry a gun.

That sounds like my cue! :)

That would be it! (rings large bell.) I think someone was eating the chocolate, not the crystal ball, unless that's why all the fortunes have been coming out the same way lately ("you will meet a tall, dark, handsome stranger at the bottom of the Willy Wonka chocolate river.") Chocolate chip cookies, anyone? (holds out large tray). We could all use some sustenance, considering how long this thread has been going on.

Although I have not read the entire thread, I am shocked no one here was properly able to define synchronicity. It is not co-incidence. It is the blending of the meaningful reality (our subjective reality with it's own language, ideas, patterns) with meaningless reality (objective reality).

That one was included. I suspect that by now, we have covered most of the variations. :)

For some reason, I expected a segue into a Porno plot at this point.

When should he have called?

When should he have called?
The first question I have is: How often does Limbo's boss call Limbo when he's working? The second question I have is: Has Limbo's boss ever called before at or around 10:57?

I guess we posted at about the same time. Please see post #1029.

Okay, but I still would be interested in knowing how often your boss calls you and whether he has ever called you before in that time frame. Also, what was the purpose of the call the other day?

I get a handful of phone calls from him per month. We meet in the morning and anything I need to know I learn then. After that anytime we talk it's because I call him, unless something unforeseen on his end comes up. That doesn't happen often.

There is no regularity to our communications, whether it's him calling me or me calling him.

He called to notify me that my partner, who works a couple of blocks away from me, was leaving for about an hour or so. I told him no problem I would cover it and he made a note of it.

Okay, thanks. I think that's a good, but not spectacular, coincidence, in that your boss sometimes does call you at work and the time varies. Now, if you had been working that job for a couple of years and your boss had never once called you at work until the other day -- when he called at the exact time that you realized that you had forgotten your cellphone -- it would be spectacular.

But you have forgotten one of the organizing principles of the universe similar to Murphy's law. The one time you forget to do something will be the one time that it matters. :)

Establishing the reality of synchronicity. :)

Yeah. Except for two things. One, I don't believe in coincidence. Two, my wife knew I was coming home. She was at the door right when I opened it. She wasn't waiting at the door for me...she went to the door at the same time.

That kind of bizarre thing happens between us all the time. We've got a thing that's called radar love.
