Madoff frauded tons of money from people... Lieberman is deciding whether to vote in favor of or against a bill that hasn't even been signed into law yet. It's a false analogy. Besides the point... he'll be voted out of congress if his decisions are such a wildly unpopular gesture. That's how politicians are hired and fired for their job performance, barring they don't break the law that require police intervention.

Correct of course, but I think the point of the post you're replying to wasn't what Liberman or the democrats did, but bafflement at what him being a Jew has to do with anything.

For certain people, merely being a conservative and/or opposing some big-ticket "progressive" bill is the same as being like Bernie Madoff, because these people just know the only possible reason anybody would be a conservative or oppose some hyped bill is because they're eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil, batman, eeeeeeeeeeeeeevil, I tell ya!

Yes, but you are aware that it's used that way sometimes, aren't you? In fact, wouldn't you say that people who would refer to Lieberman this way are doing it out of some form of bigotry or prejudice? (As others have said, what does his being a Jew have to do with anything?)

But I think that's kind of his point.

I think Parky is saying that people who are already antisemitic will consider his Jewishness the reason he did something they consider to be wrong or dumb or disloyal or whatever.

Similarly, if Obama has a major failure, anti-black racists will claim the failure is connected to his race.

I could be wrong. It could be that Parky is committing a kind of reverse prejudice and saying that Jews ought to be held to a higher standard because they're innately superior.

It sounds to me that he wants to hold Jews to a higher standard because any slip-up is fodder for the antisemites. Even that isn't very reasonable. (Racists, bigots of any kind, hold their prejudices despite evidence, not because of it. So I wouldn't worry whether something can be used as evidence to support a prejudice.)

Jews taking into consideration what others might say about them is one thing. All groups, of course, do that.

Hysterically demanding that every prominent Jew must never do anything that's not currently fashionable (e.g., oppose the health care bill, be a zionist, etc.), lest they be "remembered" as "the bad Jew that did X" by non-Jews, is something else altogether.

That is mere cowardly groveling, prostrating oneself, trembling, before the altar of "what the goyim will say". Far from making people respect Jews, this willingness to please at all costs merely raises contempt for Jews, for the same reason that all groveling and bending-over-backward-to-please raises contempt.

Parky's claim is similar to me making the following claim: if Obama's decisions end up leading to Afghanistan falling back into the control of the Taliban, he will be known as "the black man who returned Afghanistan to the Taliban".

I am obviously accusing someone in the future of making a racially prejudiced remark. The implication is that he did something bad BECAUSE he's black.

Weird. Until you mentioned it, I had always just regarded it as a recycling symbol. :) While I'm a fairly dedicated atheist, I prefer to ignore to the greatest extent possible, the religious opinions of those around me so it doesn't color my perceptions. I guess it blinds me to stuff.

It's like one of those PBS shows that talks about how the human eye works; they reveal at the very end that they had a guy dressed in a gorilla suit in virtually every scene but you don't notice it initially because your eyes are focused on something else. :|
