UFOs: The Research, the Evidence

Status
Not open for further replies.
Well, I looked through some of the evidence...There is none that suggests anything besides garden variety UFOs with nothing special to make them extraterrestrial. I am still waiting for DNA. However, I did notice how disparate some of the evidence was. The shape of the ships particularly. Essentially, all of them were different. Different designs implies different aliens. Now, with the few stars within 50 light-years distance, the probability of there being that many species that are stupid enough to visit earth for about 20 seconds and then leave is essentially zero. I mean really, why come to this planet--unless they like to visit war zones.

It certainly points to mundance explainations for the UFOs. They might just be blimps.

As always, I want the energy problems solved first. Physics still rules.

glenn

But this is merely the argument that "physics is a dead science". That is we know all there is to know about physics and nothing new might be discovered. History has proved THAT to be a totally flawed concept of physics!

The very fact of the existence of UFOs might, in any rational mind, give us pause for thought. Perhaps there ARE new physical concepts awaiting discovery. And even if there are NOT, that does not preclude UFOs originating right here. Perhaps "they" don't have to "travel" anywhere. They are "here" already! The possibilities abound. It is only via a concerted research effort that we might make any discoveries at all about them.

More: How do we know for example that UFOs are not intelligent entities in their own right? The differences between them might be described merely as individual differences. Just like we do with homosapiens. There might even exist different species. Only research can tell us the answers to such questions.

The fixation of the "debunkers" on the ET hypothesis is almost laughable. Do they REALLY have so little imagination. True scientists must have a well developed sense of imagination. They must be able to think laterally. To propose alternate hypotheses. To think "outside the box" in the search for explanations. For only then can really new theories be developed and researched. Only then can really new discoveries be made.

The way the “debunkers” see it, they rule out any useful pursuit in the study of UFOs. But critically, by ruling UFO research to be an essentially “useless” pursuit, they also make all science based on observational evidence “useless” in the same manner – and that is patently a mistaken conception of what CAN be achieved in many scientific disciplines and in the field of UFO research. Perhaps the “debunkers” simply lack the imagination to see what might be achieved?
On the contrary... Most of the sceptical participants in this thread have expressed a genuine desire for UFOlogists to raise their standards... not to give it up as useless. For UFOlogists to stop making the same basic mistakes they have been making for 50 years. The sceptics have the imagination to imagine what could be achieved if real scientific standards were applied by those who claim to be scientists who look into UFO reports.
So as with any claim that doesn't stand up to scrutiny... How can things be improved for future UFO reports, what can UFOlogists do to make sure inconsistencies are not inadvertently recorded, what can they do to better filter out the obvious hoaxes and misidentifications instead of jumping on every single seemingly anomalous report and sensationalising it.

Why are the sceptics expected to lower their standards when really it's up to the UFOlogists to raise theirs?
If you want your UFO reports to not sink in a sea of BS... make them more watertight.

You know, the funny thing about Astronomy is that it in essence it is only observational. This is because all of Astronomy concerns things which are a very long way away, so we can't actually go there and take samples, and we can't create the same conditions in a lab.

Oh, wait, no it isn't. In Astronomy we develop theories which we can test against our observations.

So, Rramjet, got any testable theories on UFOs?

But this is merely the argument that "physics is a dead science". That is we know all there is to know about physics and nothing new might be discovered. History has proved THAT to be a totally flawed concept of physics!
straw man, know any physicists saying that physics is dead ?

this film was taken behind glass
that leaves it open to all kinds of hoaxing.

and the source is anonymous but his son Marc Salmon isn't
would that be the same Marc Salmon thats a freelance web designer specialising in video effects ?

and theres something else, this isn't the original footage, this is where you'll find the original footage,
http://www.ufocasebook.com/bestufovideos2.html (2/3 down the page)
if you watch closely right til the end in the last 2 seconds of the lengthy 22 second footage you'll see something that proves that this footage was in a video editing suite long before it was released.

really, youre like a christian fundie whos just been told Jesus is coming arent you
:D

Actually this is not the ONLY footage. I was asked a question about why there are no such things as CCTV UFOs, I merely pointed you to a place where such things CAN be seen. That you pull one out of the bag of many and contend a"hoax" matters little. The FACT remains that UFOs HAVE been captured by via the medium I was questioned about. That was the only point I was making. Nothing else.

I have NO DOUBT that some will be hoaxes, as with all such things, the "debunkers" love to try and fool and confuse serious UFO research whenever and wherever they can. It is an unfortunate fact of life. However, that does NOT mean that genuine UFOs have not been captured via the medium in question. That is also a fact of life.

The evidence is all around us. It is the "debunker" community that behaves in a cult-like manner - worse ...it actively tries to destroy any hope that serious research into UFOs will ever take place. That I suggest is not only irrational, illogical even, it directly represents an antiscience stance and thus the intent behind it is totally negative and anti-human.

Don't forget to blend that with somewhere in the neighborhood of 650 of his postings filled mostly with arguments from ignorance and incredulity. :D

so what youre saying is, that you now suspect that this is a very obvious hoax, so how does that add any value to your case, remember you are supposed to be providing evidence of "Aliens", not evidence of windows movie maker

I love the fact that youre now trying to claim that UFO hoaxes are created by debunkers and not other ufo nuts like you (big sign of failure and epic fail). Go on, lie to us all and swear you never considered making your own ufo short. roflmao
so youre adding conspiracy to your list of baloney now. Time to close this thread, its way off target and you haven't got a shred of evidence, so basically youre just wasting everyones time, and have been since page 1

And we don’t have to invent conspiracy theories to understand why radar cases (for example) rarely make the public domain. First, what radar installation is geared toward UFO investigation? There is simply no provision for investigating anomalous radar blips if they are thought to pose no threat to other aircraft. Second, given the nature of the debunker community, what radar operator would willingly risk their job given the scathing attacks usually launched by debunkers should they ever go public with any claims? Let alone confidentiality agreements signed as a condition of employment. Who needs the grief caused in these situations? Given the level of abuse I have endured in this forum from simply recounting cases and arguing for the evidence... who would willingly place their name on the public record with any such claim? No conspiracy theories needed at all!

I don't suppose anyone missed the irony of Rramjet opening that paragraph with, "And we don't have to invent conspiracy theories...," then proceeding to invent his conspiracy theory, and closing with, "No conspiracy theories needed at all!"

You are 180 degrees out of phase here. I am saying physics first. The laws of physics don't disappear when you see a UFO. Conservation of momentum--laws of motion, relativity, and thermo are the same across the universe. There will be new physical concepts, but they aren't going to create energy from nothing.

Let's look at facts:

there are few stars within 20 to 50 light years.

http://www.atlasoftheuniverse.com/20lys.html

http://www.atlasoftheuniverse.com/50lys.html

The energy required to get to the nearest star would fill a hollow earth if it were chemical energy.

There has not been a single EM signal from a nearby system that has shown intelligence.

There is zero evidence that any other intelligence has developed in our solar system. So, they are not here already.

There is no alien DNA evidence.

Thinking outside the box does not mean that we accept magic as being plausible. Star trek is great, but it is not real. Thinking aliens developed life, intelligence and interstellar travel in space, that falls into the magic range. Propose something plausible when it comes to physics, and I would be interested.

No, it isn’t. I quoted the relevant portions necessary to deconstruct the unsubstantiated claim made by Maccabee et. al. that the teletype is based on an interview with the pilots by US officials…
Incredible. I showed PRECISELY HOW you had selectively quoted in a manner that totally misrepresented the interview between Pratt and McKenzie. McKenzie was trying not to reveal his source to Pratt, trying hard to throw Pratt off the trail, by prevaricating, but the evidence SHOWS that the source was Col. Mooy.
Besides, it is a matter of record that the account is based on first hand sources. We have only to look at the records of the case to understand that - and MORE we have one of the pilots involved recounting his own experiences in more recent interviews:

No, it was Col. Evans… according to Col. Evans. Please try to pay attention to what has been said.
Bob Pratt:
“Colonel McKenzie had said he had no "one-man source" for his information and had no ties with MAAG. However, the Air Force event¬ually released another document on the Iran affair.

It was a "Memorandum of Record," written by Lieutenant Colonel Olin R. Mooy, the U.S. Air Force executive officer for MAAG. He was one of two U.S. Air Force colonels who sat in on the debriefing of First Lieutenant Jalal Damirian and Second Lieutenant Hossein Shokry, the crew of the second F-4 Phantom jet (similar to the one shown here) that went up that night.

It is interesting that Colonel McKenzie's classified message to the Pentagon on the UFO incident says exactly the same thing, word for word, as Colonel Mooy's report written after the debriefing.”

More on page 3 of the “routing slip” we see that Frank B. McKenzie, Col, USAF, DATT is actually named! (http://www.nsa.gov/public_info/_files/ufo/routing_slip_ufo_iran.pdf)

Regarding Evans:
“Late in 1978, a new, revealing document about the case came to light. Todd Zechel, then a UFO researcher and one of the founders of Citizens Against UFO Secrecy (CAUS), uncovered it. He obtained a copy of a military intelligence analyst's evaluation report of the Iran incident as reported by Colonel McKenzie.

Zechel informed me that the analyst was Air Force Major Roland B. Evans, who was then stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska. I phoned Major Evans in January 1979.

“This was a classic case because everything that was bizarre about it was confirmed with real sources," he told me. "We don't have this capability to jam all these systems simultaneously.”

Major Evans, then forty, had served as a military capabilities analyst for the Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington for four years. He was then re-assigned to Offut AFB in July 1978, where he was serving as an electronic warfare officer flying in an RC-l35 reconnaissance aircraft with the 343rd Reconnaissance Squadron.”

YOU are simply distorting the truth (to put it nicely).

You have twisted the meaning of Pratts interview out of all recognition. We are supposed to be dealing with legitimate research and evidence here. Shame on you!

No, that’s what Pratt wants you to believe. Your reading comprehension skills are clearly lacking… McKenzie stated none of his sources (anybody he talked to) interviewed the pilots.

(you know, as pointed out in one of my out of context quotes)
But we NOW KNOW the source. It was Col. Mooy!

Umm… you need to go back and read Maccabee’s article again. The anonymous “Bob” I referred to that Maccabee uses as a source is not Bob Pratt. Then, when you’re done with that and figure out where you made your mistake, you can come back here and apologize. Also, please show me where Maccabee gives the last names of “Bob” and “Frank” so we can verify they were actually there at the time and in the positions described.

Presumably then you mean THIS “Bob”? (You simply did not make it clear in your first post “which” Bob you referred to).

Dr. Maccabee:
“Bob, another Westinghouse avionics engineer, was not allowed to examine the jet for several days after the incident. However, the Iranians did examine it during the day after it landed and subsequently told him that everything was OK. Four days after the incident Henry was allowed to examine the first jet and Bob was allowed to examine the second jet. They could find no problem with the avionics or radar. Henry told me that there was no possibility that the Iranians had switched radar systems (taken out the system used during the chase and replaced it with another system) because the Westinghouse engineers had kept track of the system serial numbers. The serial numbers were all the same. Hence the Westinghouse engineers had to agree with the Iranians that the jet chase had occurred, apparently with “self-repairing” failures of the avionics on two jets when in the vicinity of the UFO. Bob told me that he had worked on radar systems such as on the F-4 for many years and had never had a self-repairing failure such as reported by the Iranian pilots.”

Okay…so you don’t trust Dr Maccabee to have quoted his source correctly. Given who Dr Maccabee IS, I contend this is misguided. Moreover, this has NOTHING to do with the substantial facts of the case. That is the actual incident. You are merely grasping at minor details in order to score “cheap” points. The FACT remains that we CAN (if we wanted) ascertain the veracity of the sources. Dr Maccabee is available for contact via his website for example, so it is not as if NO source has been named and that it would be impossible to verify the source if it ever became a critical issue in the case.

Then…NOWHERE in his research report does Dr. Maccabee mention a “Frank”! Bob Pratt does, in his article, but it is none other than Frank B. McKenzie! And he NEVER mentions “Frank” without the surname! So now you are simply making things up (to put it politely).

Where do you read Jafari in there?
Jafari was the pilot of the second jet! Col. Mooy WAS at the interview with Jafari!

Most likely Col. Mooy was in the interview of the pilots of the FIRST jet as well…and that would make sense. If he was in the interview of the pilots of the second (and we know he WAS), he would have been at the first as well. Pratt might simply have been confused as to who were the pilots of the first or second jets. That’s all. Pratt’s confusion in NO way negates the information gained and subsequently reported!

Depends what you mean by “paying” the witnesses. If I was asked to travel (for example) to Washington to provide evidence before a panel of experts I would expect them to cover my expenses and pay for potential missed wages and perhaps other compensation. THAT is an entirely reasonable thing to do. That money WAS available for such purposes actually shows how serious the intent WAS.

No but their travel expenses to attend meetings at various vacation destinations were… that’s standard practice in UFOlogy in case you didn’t know.
See above! It is standard practice in ANY scientific discipline that constitutes a “panel of experts” to explore the evidence. In fact most often they are ALSO directly reimbursed for their time etc. You make out it is something peculiar to UFO research. More, I note the inclusion of your phrase “at various vacation destinations” as if it made meeting in places (such as south Florida, New York, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Mexico City – to list the locations named) illegitimate. Some of the people involved actually LIVED in those locations! And that is why I find your whole approach …disingenuous (to be polite).

Any researcher would make an effort to keep copywrite on an article of his up to date. So what? As far as I can tell, there is no information in the document that would suggest access to information beyond that of the original. Perhaps Dr Maccabee revisits his articles now and then to correct grammar, spelling, to clarify statements, etc. So what? Have you any evidence to suggest otherwise?

I think you are confusing energy with time here!

How much energy did it take to shoot the Voyagers out of the Solar system (to one day) reach another star system?

You also forget ion drives etc. No "hollow earths" there!

Besides, time is a relative concept.

You are stating "No aliens" because physics precludes it. All I am stating is that you don't know what might be discovered that might make it possible...after all, it IS possible with our current technology...time is the only factor... and that is an entirely subjective "concept".

And this is what I mean by no imagination. You are simply stuck in the1950s with your "chemical rockets" and your fixed concept of time.

And you also pretend to KNOW alien technology (no EM signals indeed!) How do you KNOW that aliens communicate by "EM signals" in the first place ...because SETI says so? Bunk!

McKenzie was trying not to reveal his source to Pratt, trying hard to throw Pratt off the trail, by prevaricating, but the evidence SHOWS that the source was Col. Mooy.
What evidence? Where’s this “Memorandum of Record”? Show it to me.

Yes, that “Bob”… the anonymous one. We already know who Bob Pratt is.

Okay…so you don’t trust Dr Maccabee to have quoted his source correctly. Given who Dr Maccabee IS, I contend this is misguided.
Apparently you don’t know Maccabee’s track record very well…

Then…NOWHERE in his research report does Dr. Maccabee mention a “Frank”!
My mistake, I meant “Henry” as already discussed. My apologies for any confusion…

Jafari was the pilot of the second jet!
Not according to Mooy.

Col. Mooy WAS at the interview with Jafari!
Not according to Mooy.

Most likely Col. Mooy was in the interview of the pilots of the FIRST jet as well…and that would make sense.
Not according to Maccabee.

This thread is a very good beginning for those wanting to understand how to make the worst possible case for anything.

Rramjet, you're way beyond the stage where people wouldn't believe you if you told them that water was wet.

Why persist? Do you really think there is a horde of people reading your drivel and nodding sagely to themselves about how unfair it all is?

No offence is meant. But just how gullible are you to take any notice of what that fraudster Vallee has to say. That's not even his real name. The guy has as much credibility as an astrologer. :) He has made a fortune from selling books to gullible people who want to believe in this non-existent phenomena.

You do realize to debunk something is to reveal it is a false claim. Therefore, debunkers serve a purpose. Your use of the term 'debunker' is typical UFO proponent nonsense but who am I to tell a "scientist" that he is completely wrong!

As for you 'evidence is all around us' comment, feel free to present us with some real evidence and not just UFO stories. Astronomers can repeat observations. If some states they discovered a comet or saw an unusual feature on Jupiter (which happened this summer), others can check it out and verify it. When somebody says they saw an alien spaceship/UFO, how do you verify it? What if hundreds of people were present and did not see the UFO? Does that make the UFO report a false one or were all those people just 'debunkers' acting in a cult like fashion. I find your approach anti-science and cult-like. Now you are grasping at straws.

Hi Darat -welcome to the fray!

So then you do not believe "UFOs exist". According to the above (by inference) you believe that everything thus far "labelled" as UFO has a mundane explanation. Fair enough.

How in the blue hell do you reach that conclusion ? Darat ADDS one possibility to your list, which I'd like to point out DIDN'T include "mundane explanation", indicating that YOU don't believe mundane explanations exist.

Quite the opposite, Darat has left the option open.

And for the last time: UFO means the object, whatever it is, is unidentified due to insufficient information. Everybody agrees that those exist.

Sheesh.
