This story has been percolating among the feminist blogs over the last few days, when it came out that Obama finally brought a woman along on one of his golf outings.
Given reports that Obama has played 26 rounds of golf since his inauguration, and assuming that he always was part of a foursome, that indicates his playing partners have included 77 men and one woman. Note that the writer at Politics Daily forgives him with this note:
Of course, golf is one of those sports where you don't need to be at the same skill level as others in your foursome. And Bonnie Erbe points out the flaw in the claim that the women around him aren't good enough at basketball:
A commenter on that post raises some questions about Tee-Shirts featuring very sexist sayings about Hillary and Sarah Palin being marketed at Obama events and supposedly on Obama's MySpace page, although I doubt very much the latter claim.
My take? It's probably just another symptom of the cluelessness of Obama's advisors. How could they not realize the problems they'd get into when it was learned that Obama had not invited any women on his golf outings? I do think that at times feminists can get carried away with the notion that any all-male activity is where the patriarchy decides how to stick it to women. However, with regard to the basketball games, at least, this long ESPN report indicates that it's a very coveted invite.
We don't know if her drives were straight or her putts true, but Melody Barnes' round of golf Sunday was notable for at least one reason: She became the first woman to join President Obama's foursome since he took office.

I don't think there are that many women in Obama's inner circle who play either basketball or golf at his skill level.

President Obama drew heat last week for a story that surfaced outing his private White House male-only b-ball games. The story was that even though two female members of his cabinet were members of their college basketball teams, they were excluded, as were all women, from this most private of male-only clubs. The story became a metaphor for how the president views women generally and threatened to reveal some inconvenient truths about the man.
