Nick Griffin, BNP leader on BBC's Question Time

It happens to be the case that the BNP are good at this, and good at exploiting the impression amongst many that 'they took our jobs'.

In the last general election they got a total of 192,746 votes nationwide. This has been going up ever since 1992. However, in 1987, they only got 553 votes, nationwide. The following election it climed to 7,631. What happened in 1987?
In Uk elections you can only vote for a party if they have a candidate in your constituency. There are around 650 constituencies. If a candidate does not get enough votes s/he loses their deposit. As such minor parties do not put candidates forward for every seat as it gets expensive. The vote for the BNP reflects how many candidates they put forward more than their support.

Stats for the BNP

1983; 54 candidates; 0 got their deposit back; 0.5% average vote
1987 2 candidates; 0 got their deposit back; 0.6% average vote
1992 13 candidates; 0 got their deposit back; 1.2% average vote
1997 57 candidates; 3 got their deposit back; 1.3% average vote
2001 33 candidates; 5 got their deposit back; 3.9% average vote

from here page 31.

Among voters polled by YouGov, 4 percent said they would “definitely” consider voting for the BNP, 3 percent said they would “probably consider it", and 15 percent said they were “possible” voters for the party, the Telegraph said.

Reminds me of the poll when it was "discovered" 20% or so of Americans are "holocaust deniers". It turns out they answered "yes" to a question to the effect of "do you think it's a logical possibility of some theoretical sort that the holocaust never happened?". When asked point blank "do you think the holocaust happened", in another poll, only 1% or so denied it.

Same thing here. What does possible mean? Does it mean "I mostly agree with the BNP, but am usually loyal to party X, so I'm undecided"? Or does it mean "I might do it as a protest vote to annoy the idiots in power if I'm really pissed off (in either the American or British sense) on election day"?

Considering that in this poll, "possible" is even less likely than "probably consider it", I tend to think it's more of the latter, in which case, I'm only surprised it's not 80%, and is totally meaningless.

I wonder why the population of China is perceived as being such a big problem. It certainly has a big population (1,323,324,000) but it is a big country (3,705,407 sq miles) giving a population density of 360 people per square mile.

Many other countries are far more densely populated including UK, Gemany and Italy in Western Europe and India, Japan, Taiwan and Bangladesh in Asia. So why is it China that is perceived as having the problem?

:eye-poppi

Wow, Australia only has 2 people per square kilometre, let alone mile...

I am not a Brit, but this seems to make sense to me from what I've read over the years about the UK.

Via Instapundit comes a disturbing report that one-fifth of the British electorate would consider voting for the British Nationalist Party (BNP), which is considered by almost everyone left or right to be a genuine fascist party.

How did Britain come to this state?

Simple, the current liberal order has proven itself ineffective in addressing many of the major problems that Britain faces. As I wrote three years ago, liberal orders don’t slowly evolve into authoritarian ones. Instead, they become less and less effective until they suddenly collapse into an authoritarian order. People simply lose faith that the liberal order can function and they throw their support behind an authoritarian order just to survive.

...

Britain faces major problems with a permanent economic underclass, low economic mobility, illegal immigration and a large, vocal and often violent unassimilated Islamic subculture. The native working class in particular feels squeezed by economic competition from low-cost immigrants. More importantly, they have seen themselves relegated in social status to the bottom of the heap. Much as in America, where the once-venerated rural poor are now despised and ignored “rednecks,” lower-income white Britons now see themselves pushed aside and spit on in favor of the left fawning over illegal immigrants and Muslims.

The BNP could scoop up a lot of support if it could slow down illegal immigration. Doing so would give an immediate economic boost to Britain’s native low-skilled workers. Even easier, they could no doubt pick up a lot of support merely by treating low-income white Britons with respect and by putting them at the center of their policy recommendations.

By smearing as racist everyone concerned with illegal immigration and the overboard tolerance for radical Islam, the British left is desensitizing everyone to the legitimate charge when it is directed at the BNP. People think, “Well, I’m concerned about illegal immigration, Islamists, the white poor, etc., and I’m not a racist so maybe the BNP isn’t either.” The overuse of the left’s catch-all denunciation deprives it of meaning and force. People may simply stop listening to the left’s warnings because they’ve so many times labeled people with legitimate concerns as racist. By their own narcissism, self-righteousness and contempt, the left is actively driving people to fascist solutions just as their more radical ideological ancestors did back in the 1920s.

This part strikes me as just insane:
Leaks which showed how Labour intentionally flooded Britain with immigrants in order to gain a permanent political majority and rub multiculturalism in the faces of poor whites has provoked a storm of outrage in the UK. It plays directly into the BNP narrative of invasion abetted by leftist treason. The Telegraph reported that “Labour threw open Britain’s borders to mass immigration to help socially engineer a ‘truly multicultural’ country, a former Government adviser has revealed.” But it was manner in which the plan was sugar-coated which rankled the most.

On the other hand, these kind of over the top protests give the BNP a chance to play the "we are matyrs for free speech" card and I don't think it is particularly smart to give them that opportunity.

Very profetic words dudalb. And that is exactly what happened. A BBC poll showed that 22% of the Brits were considering voting for him after seeing the rather weak performance of Griffin. And that is exactly the right-wing potential that has already been realised in Belgium, Austria, France and the Netherlands. Britain is a bit slow, no surprises here, but in the end will react against the attempts by Labour in turning Britain in an Islamic state.

And mind you, 22% is the potential in relatively prosperous circumstances like it was until summer 2008, circumstances that are melting away before our eyes. 30% electorate is enough, as recent history has shown all too clear to us, to initiate fundamental change in Europe. And I am not talking about Obama's small change.

And that day is rapidly approaching.

The amusing thing is, you actually believe what you're saying.

The UK's spectator has it right: the problem is that the only people saying the truth about Islamic fascism in the UK are... the BNP fascists, who also mix it with tons of lies about Muslims in general. So what we have (as their latest issue has) is a "battle of the fascists": BNP vs. Islamic radicals.

a book has just come out by a Potugusese writer in which he explains that unlike other religions, Islam is about conquering and killing others. The avreage muslim cannot understand the Koran, but educated Arabs like Bin laden, can, and they know that Koran is mostly about destroying the infidels

[QUOTEvery amusing site for anyone who isnt a Nazi sympathizer
;)

please try to avoid repetetive strain injury though[/QUOTE]

"i`m not a Nazi sympathizer, but why doesn`t the media shows more symphaty for the Nazis?"

from "broken news"

unfortunately, in our western tolerance, many of us still dont understand that muslims havent really good intentions towards the west. When we find out it will be too late,

Out of interest, is English your first language?

Muslims in Britain are more interested in smoking weed than destroying Western civilisation. It's a great shame various poisonous individuals like Anjem Choudary (How I loathe him) try to get them to waste their lives, but I can't see religion holding up that much longer in the UK. It really is decaying, especially amongst the youth.

No wonder Al Quaeda finds it easy to infiltrate, then.

The average British Muslim university student seems to already have the shaggy beard, connections with drug-growing friends, polygamy (just ask his three girldriends), and loony politics... all the Al Quaeda operative has to do is learn by heart a few Monty Python / Red Dwarf monologues and learn to drink heavily, and they fit right in.

Al Queda's problem is how to get them out again.

"Damn, agent #342 prefers to sit around smoking weed and watching monty python than become a martyr! It's the 17th agent we lost this month! I got to speak to Biggus Abu Dikkus about... DAMN! Did it again!"
