Happy Windows 7 Day

I have a laptop with vista and a desktop with xp. Both came with the pc and have been working great ever since.

I'll get windows 7 when I buy a new desktop, a purchase I keep delaying because my older systems just keep working.

You know, you could make Vista's Start Menu look like the old one. Go to Taskbar and Start Menu properties, click the "Start Menu" tab, then click "Classic Start Menu".

There is a "CSMenu" utility you can download, to bring the classice menu back into Win7, if you didn't like it. The option is not built into the OS.

Very weird. Well, good thing it worked out for you. The hardware vendors really screwed the pooch when Vista first came out, so you got lucky this time. :)

It's a bit of a convoluted, but actually you CAN test it. Without replacing Ubuntu.

Download the "Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise 90-Day Eval. x86 (full install)" VHD files.

Install VirtualBox on Ubuntu, and use the downloaded VHD on a virtual machine under VirtualBox. It'll take some jiggling to get the VHD working under VirtualBox, but it's supposed to be able to do it.

Enjoy your 90-day eval. Let it help you figure out if it's worth it.

I can see the convenience of upgrading, but it really is noticeable when you start fresh. When you install an OS from scratch and you do not upgrade, you will have a cleaner system: Less garbage files on your drives, cleaner registry, and it encourages you to search and update your drivers.

The other thing that will help you noticeably is to slipstream any updates or service packs to the installation source (if there are any available).
 
I have a free Windows 7 upgrade coming from HP for a laptop that has Vista, I have no idea when they will actually send it.

I want to install it on the desktop PC, but I'm running XP and the upgrade will be painful. I'll wait a few more months for that one.
 
I saw another Apple ad on TV. It showed the PC guy saying that the OS is great and you should trust him and then there were flashbacks to Vista and other OS'.

This is unfair and deceptive. Vista was rushed to market for reasons outside of Microsoft's control.

And Operating Systems have to be updated to keep pace with technology and demands so they will always seem to have problems down the road. Apple knows this as well.

I think Apple is being too underhanded and deceptive and desperate.

Took you a while to get that impression. They've been that way since 1984.

Microsoft should take the latest Apple ads as a sign that Apple is somewhat threatened. Real or no, Vista and XP had existing common complaints by the time Apple put them into trash-talk ad form. Windows 7 has no such impression by the public, and for the most part a lot of the predictions about Win 7 have been "this is great!" Apple is sort of jumping the gun with their ads this time around, in my opinion, and it's likely in no small part due to both the upcoming holiday season and the Microsoft ads that have been on television with people choosing PC computers over Macs.

Only time will tell, but I get the impression that the Mac ads tweak a whole lot of people (I just roll my eyes) which, by now, would have given me the impression Apple would switch to a new campaign. They don't seem to be the type of company to beat an advert campaign into the ground, and if it's starting to get negative responses I'd imagine they'd shift gears right quick.

Or, you know, we can expect a Mac ad coming up touting the price of the Snow Leopard upgrade versus an upgrade cost for Windows.

So far, Snow Leopard is a Vista-like dud out of the gate itself. I've read so many issues with it that even the $29 upgrade price won't draw me away from Leopard (which is working splendidly).

On the other hand, I just ordered Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade to replace my Windows XP Pro x64 boot. I'm going to do a fresh install and reinstall everything. As a developer, though, the bit about issues with Visual Studio 2005 bothers me. I use VS 2005 Professional and it is the current one that works best with the C++ SDK that I use for plugin development. 2008 doesn't work so well. That puts me into a bit of a bind. Maybe "XP Mode"?

I'm expecting mine to arrive tomorrow, but I'll likely need to wait until Thursday night to do the upgrade on my laptop. I can't really afford to have a lengthy upgrade when I need the computer for my design work. And if anything goes wrong I'll have 5 days to fix it :)
 
I told them to make it faster, and they made it faster!

I told them I wanted more Calculator options, they included more calculator options.

Windows 7 was my idea.
