Evidence for why we know the New Testament writers told the truth.

From another sourse perhaps.

Well Tacitus knew of him and his demise, or did he invent it?
that's not evidence of a resurrection. That's evidence that there were people who believed a resurrection happened.

Describing the fact that Heaven's gate believed there was a spaceship behind the halleybop comet isn't evidence that there was a spaceship behind the halleybop comet.

Nit picking is self debasing, just wanted to share this with you Paul.
Nit picking, that is funny, whale away, have fun. But this bible is supposed to be the so-called word and/or inspired word of a so-called god, I’m sure it could stand up to net picking if it was. After all it has two versions of genesis in it for starters, and being a so-called book of a so-called all-powerful god those things in it should be all straighten out, but seems that it isn’t all powerful after all.

Yes but the other half just about cover all our anti social behaviours.

5. You shall not dishonor your parents.

6. You shall not murder.

7. You shall not commit adultery

8. You shall not steal.

9. You shall not commit perjury.

10. You shall not covet.

5, 7 and 10 are not against the law in the US, as far as I know. So, again, why should the 10 commandments be on the wall in a courthouse, when only 3 of them relate to laws, and those 3 are crimes in societies with no connections to the Abrahamic religions?

Sorry for not answering way back when. No I can not shape up if the "look with lust" was the minimum entry point to adultery, for my money it is the act. Although the sin is in the thought.
Ok, for you, adultry must be an act.
Well, what act and with whom?

Is it adultry for two unmarried individuals to kiss?
Mutual masterbation?
oral sex?
or must they have actual intercourse? would anal sex count?

Or is adultry an act of a married individual having sex with someone other than thier marriage partner?

Do you view gender matters? Can both a man and a woman commit adultry? Does it matter if their partner is same sex or not?

I'm not making a joke here, I'm asking seriously. You had originally alluded to the idea that 7 of the 10 commandments were so amazing that if we followed them all other laws wouldn't be needed. I'm trying to see how adultry fits this claims.

Jesus was prone to exaggeration?

Better tell the catholics, they seem to have taken the whole "Wine/blood bread/body thing" a bit too seriously.:p

Hmm, you might have a point there; at least, though, it is actually wine and not grape juice:eek:

(With a bit of luck we will turn the thread to alcohol again)

She's the Kevin Trudeau of the religious Far-right of America.
Not a reference that helps, I'm afraid :) The only Trudeaus I know of are Pierre and Margaret, and the guy who writes Doonesbury.

She sells lies, conspiracy theorists and strokes the fears of a certain kind of ignorant conservative to be able to sell her books and wares. She knows exactly what she doing since she hits all the major talking points and picks out random factoids about the left and atheist etc and purposefully misquotes them.

Yes, I've actually gathered that much about her from comments here; sounds like a nasty piece of work. Luckily we don't see anything of her in the UK.

My original comment was intended to make DOC examine some of his assumptions, and think about what his audience might know. I fully realise this was somewhat optimistic.

Funny isn’t, not once, yes, not once will these guys say, "You know, those points your making makes sense, there are way too many holes in the augment I'm making, I will stop patching those holes up and rethink the whole thing".

Akhenaten do you say anything, or is snippets the whole act?

Just waiting for evidence.

Oh come now. Why should I believe you.
It's not like you're some some astrophysicist.
:p

I knew I wasn't spelling it right, but I was too lazy to look up the proper name. My apologizes to Hale and Bopp. And my Apologies to Cindy Lauper for failing to make any She-bop references.

Likely the various "apocryphal" books of the bible. Bart Ehrman says there are over 100 "gospels" known to scholars, some as complete texts, some as mere fragments, some only by mention from other sources.

I don't know about writings left out of the OT.....

I guess that depends on what you mean by left out. The Tanakh is different from the Catholic OT, which is different from the Protestant OT, which is different from the Greek Orthodox OT, mostly in the historical books and prophets.

Pax I have said from the outset that I question the probable occurance of the event in purely physical terms. What I was hoping to convey with the Mark passage was that people went to the tomb and found it empty, and then I was aided with a half dozen differing tomb empty stories from zoot. The more accounts of the same core event even if detail alters gives a value to the possible validity. In regard to your Rabbi comment, he had about 70 core followers, mostly extended family of the 12, so it is a given that his life was not chronicled at the time, there were mesiahs on every street corner, the Jews had been promised one.
Here is one point that completely and utterly false. Mass hysteria, hearsay and stories spread very easily.

The so called "Miracle of the sun of Fatimah" is a classic example.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracle_of_the_Sun

Was there an empty tomb? I have no idea since we don't even have a single original story or eyewitness claimant to have been there. We have a story that has been copied and repeated. In fact the ending of Mark is known to be an addition. In the original they rolled a stone over the tomb---end of story.

Ignore facts by using Ninja sidestep.
End of story Pax,.......what end of story.......170 odd pages later.

And I've explained how it doesn't even make sense for Christianity to exist without the resurrection, so the fact that it does exist and is the largest religion in the world can be considered partial evidence {for the resurrection}. This is so obvious, but most people never consider it.

This is like saying "it doesn't even make sense for scientology to exist without Xenu being real..."

Not the same because Xenu is not the primary basis on which the religion of scientology exists today for the majority of its members.

From Wiki on Xenu:

Senior members of the Church of Scientology have several times publicly denied or minimized the importance of the Xenu story, but others have admitted its existence. In a BBC Panorama program that aired on May 14, 2007, senior Scientologist Tommy Davis interrupted when celebrity members are asked about Xenu, saying: "None of us know what you're talking about. It's loony. It's weird."...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenu

So you can't compare the fact that the resurrection is whole essence and the reason for the existence of Christianity to Xenu who senior scientology members have denied or minimized.
