Evidence for why we know the New Testament writers told the truth.

Let's just say if I was an atheist and read a thread where someone was able to place 1200 posts in an New Testament evidence thread, I would spend $4 dollars to get a used copy.

I think that says a great deal about your ability to reason. You truly believe that the number of posts someone makes is significant, rather than what they say?

Actually you can buy a brand new paperback version of the 420 page book for 10.87

I can see your point, DOC.
The thing is, after reading the bits which have been posted up, plus that critique I linked to earlier, it really doesn't seem likely to me this book will be worth the money.
That's my view, but then I loathe the adverts which invite us to spend a reasonable quantity of money to learn the "secrets" of having whiter teeth, etc.
So at least to me, being invited to shell out money to learn how to gain a blissful afterlife just sets off alarm signals.
Since you feel the authors' views are so significant, why not post up extracts for the purpose of discussion, keeping in mind the copyright laws, obviously.

Wow, that's almost a good enough reason for me to read the book.

But, ya know...Pax, Joobz, and Hokulele together have nearly 2000 posts in this thread (and that's not even all of the posters on their side of the argument!).

Sorry Doc, but you can see that there are far more posts against your evidence than for it, thus I have no option but to believe what Joobz, Hok, and Pax, et al. have posited in this thread.

Pax, Joobz, Hok...any books you suggest I read?

Godless, by Dan Barker. Atheist Universe, by David Mills. Jesus Interrupted and Misquoting Jesus, by Bart D Ehrman. are a few. All are available at Amazon. I think you can buy them through this forum as well which gets a small cut from the proceeds.

I doubt you own or read the whole book but aren't you curious what Geisler has to say about Steven Hawkings Imaginary time, Heidelberger's Uncertainty Principle, NASA's Robert Jastrow's writings, the Law of Causation etc.
Enlighten me.
what does geisler say about ANY of those?

misquoting Jesus is a great start.

If you were an atheist, you'd be laughing at your 1200 posts.

So the fact that it might affect how you spend eternity is not worth one dollar?
I don't know about it's impact on one's eternity, but I can say it makes one an idiot in this lifetime.

After 1200 posts, and still no concrete evidence that the N/T writers told the truth!!:)

Would you people please stop making this about doc? He doesn't want to have to warn you about it again. :p

Making what about Doc? Warn us that he doesn't know the difference between Heidelberg and Heisenberg?

If I was an agnostic and read a thread called "Evidence for why we know the New Testament writers told the truth." and found the author was able to place 1200 posts without providing a jot of evidence, I would be very disappointed.

There's a plaque on a house in Würzburg that says 'Werner Heisenberg may have lived here'"

The story thus far...

In the "Do Most Atheists know that Science..." thread I mentioned Norman Geisler and Frank Turek's book called "I Don't Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist" a few times because of its clear explanations of scientific theories. But, yes, they did talk about more than science.

In chapter 11 of their book they give the top 10 reasons we know the New Testament writers told the truth. I'll mention some of those reasons and maybe expound on them as time permits.

Reason #1

The New Testament Writers Included Embarrassing Details About Themselves.

For example some passages portray the disciples as dim-witted, uncaring, and cowards.

Reason #2

The New Testament Writers Included Embarrassing Details and Difficult Sayings of Jesus.

For example in one passage someone call Jesus a drunkard, and in another He was called demon-possessed, another a deceiver.

Reason #3

The NT Writers Left in Very Demanding Sayings of Jesus.

For example: (Matthew 5:28) "I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart".

And (Matt. 5:44-45) "I tell you Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you...

As the book says "They certainly didn't make up a story that made life easier for themselves."

Reason #9

The New Testament Writers Describe Miracles Like Other Historical Events: With Simple, Unembellished Accounts.

If they made them up it would be likely that they would have used grandiose and extravagant images. The book says the gospels talk about the Resurrection in a matter of fact almost bland way.

Reason #10

The New Testament Writers Abandoned Their Long Held Sacred Beliefs and Practices, Adopted New Ones, And Did Not Deny Their Testimony Under Persecution Or Threat Of Death

Given your refusal to accpet a FREE copy of Simon Singh's Big Bang when Volatile offered it to help you understand said subject I am going to publicly call into question the honesty of that statement.
