Cue the antivaxxers in 5... 4... 3... 2... 1...

It reminds me of the girl allergic to peanuts who died after kissing her boyfriend who had eaten a peanut butter sandwich hours before. Turns out it wasn't the peanut allergy, but there was a decent amount of time between the almost hysterical "OMG peanut kiss of death!!!" news that rapidly travelled around the world and the coroner's conclusions which were not so widely reported.

Oh, I'm sure that, unless it is found to 100% the vaccine's fault for some bizzaro reason, any coroner's report will be ignored or accused of fabrication to protect the vaccine makers, etc. Nothing will matter after this. The vaccine killed the kid, no matter what. It does not matter that HPV doesn't even kill people directly (it can kill via cancer caused by it eventually), the vaccine can still kill people. It was weird instant vaccine induced cancer of the brain or something.

Ohhh ohh oooohhhh, I know, it was aggravated by the vaccine, yep yep, even if it was an allergy to a bee sting and she was stung minutes before! The vaccine, given hours before, had plenty of time to make her suddenly even more allergic to bee stings or more prone to an asthma attack, or gave her even more killer seizures. Still the vaccine's fault no matter what!
 
Dr Caron Grainger, joint director of public health for NHS Coventry and Coventry City Council, said the results of a preliminary post-mortem examination had "revealed a serious underlying medical condition which was likely to have caused death".
"We are awaiting further test results which will take some time," she said. "However indications are that it was most unlikely that the HPV vaccination was the cause of death."

Meh, it just doesn't sound right to call vaccines a drug. Not for me to say though. *shrug* Prophalactics, like gloves and condoms prevent disease... are they drugs too... okay, Now I'm just being silly!
 
I've always thought it was strange to call vaccines drugs as well. Proponents of "alternative" medicine claim they try to strengthen the body's immune system so that it can fight off diseases naturally, on its own. Isn't this exactly what vaccines do? So why do alt-medders fight them so hard?

Oh, I know:

1) They're widely used by the "mainstream"
2) They work
 
If you vaccine 1,4 mil girls what are the chance of one of them dying within hours?
 
This raises a classic, but difficult bioethics question:
What mortality rate associated with a vaccination would be considered acceptable?
 
The real question is out of millions of people vaccinated, what are the chances of someone dying of totally unrelated health reasons the same day.

There is just no reason for a vaccine to kill anyone, really. Allergic reactions are one in a million and treated immediately. GBS is inevitable whether you get a vaccine or the disease, and dying of GBS is even less than one in a million.

HPV is not the kind of disease that kills you either, except slowly if after it causes cancer. The chances of the vaccine killing you is pretty darn nil.

I was thinking of dying from something else.

But you do have a good point.
My best estimate is somewhere below the causalities from the disease, somehow adjusted for timespan between vaccine and disease related deaths.
(Ok, not that helpful)
 
There must be some side effects of vaccines, I once asked a physician giving me some vaccine what else she had in stock, and was told that she did not give vaccines unless there was a reasonable risk of exposure to the disease.

Reasonable risk of exposure, via travel probably. What vaccine haven't you had? Some shots wane over time, like measles, so you don't bother unless you are going to travel and need primed immunity.
 
I have had quite a lot of vaccines, I think she doubted I would need "Japanese meningitis" or something.

Sure there are. There's been deaths associate with attenuated live viruses as in the Yellow fever vaccine.

I'm not trying to be a pain, but I think it's important to consider the fact that vaccinations DO harbor an extremely small (but non-zero) risk. These risks are much smaller than the risks involved with driving, but the question remains "what minimum level of mortality do we allow before we consider the vaccination to be acceptable for non-elective use."
