Roman Polanski arrested (discuss)...

It was not consensual by any stretch of the imagination.

Firstly, a thirteen year old is not of the age of consent.

But, even had she been of the age of consent, she was drugged and then raped.

Geimer was 13 years old when Polanski allegedly plied the aspiring model with Champagne and Quaaludes and told her he was photographing her for French Vogue.

If this were not a famous director, he would have been unceremoniously tried, probably convicted, and sentenced to prison time.

Because he was a famous director who had already suffered a horrendous tragedy in his life, he was given a chance to plead guilty and thus avoid a lengthy sentence. He could not take that much responsibility for what he had done, and fled the country.

The victim has said she needed to forgive him for her own sake. There is a reason that the victims of crimes are not allowed to pass sentence on their victimizers. It is not only a crime against the victim, but also a crime against the state itself. It is the People of California versus Roman Polanski.

according to 13 year old victim, the sex was not consensual. And she was drugged on top of that. He should have served a long lengthy sentance.

France doesn't extradite its own citizens. So it should have kept him in jail in France.

BTW, any reason why Switzerland was the country that decided to arrested him, and not the other European countries he lived in and visited since his warrant?

I read in the New York Times today it was because they had quite a bit of advanced knowledge he would be there which gave them enough time to get the paperwork together and plan the arrest.

Good for them.

Was it done with clockwork efficiency?

(sorry, I couldn't resist).

I fully agree 100% with you. BUT on the other hand if really the judge & prosecutor MADE an agreement only to recant it afterward, they should be taken to task (if still alive) and the original agreement upheld.
Any lawyer will tell you there are no guarantees in a plea bargain.

Question: is this the only time he's been accused of paedophilia?
IIRC it was no secret that he also had sex with Natassja Kinski (sp?) when she was 13. Seems he has a thing for pubescent girls.

I used to think that he should be subject to whatever punishment the legal system decided upon but then I learned he was a great artist and now I think everyone should stop harassing him.

Absolutely ridiculous arresting Polanski for this after 32 years.

Good grief.

Laws in the U.S. on this are totally ludicrous anyway, and not based upon research. The woman involved has said she doesn't want him to serve time, and I doubt there was any great harm done here.

With all of the criminals running rampant, some prosecutor arrests a guy for what sounded like consensual sex, 32 years ago? Some kind of statute of limitations has to apply somehow to this. If not it should. Please, this prosecutor must be some kind of moron.

I have a very strong feeling that Polanski will be free before long, and he should be. Watch and see. Not all justice systems are as stupid as the U.S.

Geeezzzzz.

Not at all rediculous. He raped a child and jumped bail to avoid going to jail for his crime. Not to get all Les Miz, but the law was clear as was his guilt and he just decided that he shouldn't have to pay for his stupidity. By this logic, no Nazi war criminal should have been prosecuted if, say, they could stay free for 30 years. It makes no sense.

Thirteen is just a child.

More importantly, the 13 year old apparently felt it was wrong, having complained about an "assault". Hence whether it was "statuatory" rape or actual rape:

wikipedia said:
Geimer testified that Polanski performed various sexual acts on her[28][29][30] after giving her a combination of champagne and quaaludes.[31]

Well, that doesn't sound kosher at all.

She did recently ask the charges be dropped, with the prosecutor's focus on "lurid details" actually causing her and her family considerable psychological harm.

Slightly off topic, but in Mexico time spent on the lam is considered as still serving your sentence. So even if you escape from prison and manage to stay in hiding until your sentence runs out you're free at that point. Likewise if you flee from prosecution.

Some countries have strange laws.

Yeah, but he lived and shot alot of his movies in France, he shot "Oliver Twist" in the Czec Republic, "The Pianist" in Germany, " The Ninth Gate" in Portugal, he shot "Death and the Maiden" in Chile and Spain, for months on end. These kinds of productions take months to shoot and prepare, and scout, these countries couldn't get the paperwork in time?

It is absolutely beyond me why the simple and 100% accurate statement: "Roman Polanski drugged a 13yr old girl and then had forced intercourse with her" is not the end of the conversation.

He did it, he should serve whatever sentence is required. That's all there is to be said.

Polanski's escapades must have been the inspiration for Ira Einhorn to flee to Europe in 1981 to escape prosecution for murdering Holly Maddux. After the French authorities arrested him in 1997, it took another four years before France would extradite him to the U.S.

So a Polish guy called Roman who's a French citizen gets arrested by the Swiss for having sex with an American.
I still can't work out whether globalisation is a good thing or not. Time for a lie down.
