From Werner Herzog's Rogue Film School Web site, on the "about" page. Points 8 and 9:

  • Related, but more practical subjects, will be the art of lockpicking. Traveling on foot. The exhilaration of being shot at unsuccessfully. The athletic side of filmmaking. The creation of your own shooting permits. The neutralization of bureaucracy. Guerrilla tactics. Self reliance.
  • Censorship will be enforced. There will be no talk of shamans, of yoga classes, nutritional values, herbal teas, discovering your Boundaries, and Inner Growth.
:)

Further proof that Werner Herzog is about the best guy ever.

Ever. :)

One more point up in my book. Where he already has about a million.

It's sort of a shame that at the same time he denounces BS, he makes me a theist... because Herzog is GOD :)

OT, I know, but what was the deal with Grizzly Man ? Was it a real film or a spoof ?

I haven't seen it yet, but I have heard arguments for both sides.

We ran that film at the cinema where I used to work. I'm pretty bloody sure it was for real. The guy it was about, Timothy Treadwell, was a real activist who was eaten by the bears he so loved. I'm not sure how it could be taken for a spoof, though it was not a very sympathetic documentary. It's pretty clear that Herzog saw Treadwell as a fool who anthropomorphised the bears to a fault and got what he had coming.

Treadwell: We should save the bears! The bears are my friends, see!
Bear: Grrrr! Nom nom nom.
Treadwell: Ow! I'm being mauled to death! Oh the irony that I have been trying to save these creatures and they show me not a bit of mercy! Augh!

There was a sympathy there, he just didn't take the easy saccharine route to it. There was an acknowledgement that Treadwell may well have found something that he personally may have really needed in his life, and even though he wasn't meaningfully protecting any Bears and he was clearly an idiot, he's also someone who built up a fantasy to escape his life and got exactly the adventure he wanted. The film does a certain amount of mocking Treadwell, but that isn't the full extent of it.

That's my take too. My real sympathy's for his girlfriend who got eaten too if memory serves.

There's audio of them getting eaten. It's available on the internet if you look for it. I found it a year or so ago but couldn't bring myself to play it.

So, what's wrong with nutrition and personal growth?

I don't see anything that points to Grizzly Man as being anything else than the real deal. Fantastic movie of a fantastic personality.

I'm not sure the audio you found was the real deal. IIRC, there is only one tape, held by his ex-girlfriend, and she has not released it.
