Michael Vick: persecuted by PETA?

Yes, you make no moral judgments against him, only legal ones.
If I were to make moral judgments against OJ Simpson, I suppose you'd be with me with the torches and pitchforks over Nicole, wouldn't you? :p Of course you would, since you are such an advocate of vigilantism. ;)

How should criminal records effect employment? Is it wrong for various employers to look at someones criminal record when vetting applicants?

There are so many careers that would be over with any felony, why should I care if pro football is one of them?

It doesn't quite follow for me. Criminals aren't allowed to do jobs where trust is involved. Teachers can't be child molestors and cons can't be judges. That's set by the employer.

However Vick's crime was participating in a violent sport and now ppl want to pressure him out of a different violent sport. It's up to the NFL, not the fans or PETA or any other lynch mob.

Let us put it in this context, I dislike PETA, I usually dislike people which force an additional punishment after the initial punishment has been done, but let me be honest, there are some case where I fail at my own philosophy and its the case where there are cruel willful treatment against human or animal *AND* the perpetrator show no real remorse AFTER being punished (remorse before do not count). Has he publicly admited guilt / remorse and started working on fighting against other people running dog fight on his own ? Or was he just declared guilty, punished and want now to start a new life / continue with his life ? Too bad. He should have thought of that before doing a crime that most people will see as heinous and show no contrition after being punished. People will see that as "I have been caught but I have no regrets".

obviously, i know its legal ..... i said WISH, not should or must.

i just have little time or respect for people who mame, torture and kill animals for pure enjoyment (fox hunting, dog fighting, bull fighting, cock fighting ... they're all legal in some country) .... sorry for this moral judgement - i'll never do iot again

Yes and engineers can't have traffic tickets. There are so many jobs that any criminal record will disqualify you for even if the criminal record is not relevent to your job.

<-----See my location.

Woo hoo! Something new to throw snowballs and batteries at!

I can't believe a Greener would dispose of batteries in a manner that would pose a threat to the environment.

Just sayin that the relevance is set by the employer. Society metered out his punishment despite some people's objections and if the NFL considers him eligible to play in thier league then a few loud mouth's opinions shouldn't have any bearing on that.

He should get all his endorsements back as well then? I think he would be a great spokeman for Purina Dog Chow.

He has a very public job, but clearly it is wrong to express ones thoughts on the matter. Free speach is only for those who have millions of dollars after all.

He's an entertainer, if his presence on the field diminishes ticket sales for the NFL, it shows he can no longer perform his job well.

I'm just saying that I'll vote with my own dollar and keep my opinons as my own. Those that choose to let Vick endorse their products have no more sway over me than those that feel the need too excerise their right to free speech and espouse their opinon through a megaphone held directly to my ear.

I agree with Terrel Owens, a sign that the Apocalypse is upon us.

Here's the deal. Michael Vick is being unfairly persecuted by the NFL, who are afraid of angry animal lovers. He was severely punished for his nasty crime: running a dog fighting ring. Even wrongful death suits often don't amount to damages at this scale for the defendant.

Who are these vicious persons, who love animals and who are willing to continue to wreck the life of a man due to their emotional reaction to his crime, for which he has been punished. What adamantine hearts on display among these allegedly warm hearted, pet loving people.

Even as Vick's sentence was coming to an end, I kept catching news pieces of efforts to influence the NFL commissioner that Vick is not suitable as a NFL player. His significant talent notwithstanding, they are prepared to pursue a character assassination campaign against him to preclude his being employed in his specialty.

Mr Vick not only went to prison, and has paid his proper societal debt as determined by our courts, but he lost (by paying back bonuses, losing salary, and losing his endorsement contracts) something like 40 million dollars.

Let's put this in perspective. If I were to run a dog fighting ring out of my home, got caught, and went to court, to apply 40 million worth of penalty to me you would have to:

Confiscate the entirety of my cash and net worth, and that of my immediate family, and my extended family, and my in laws, and then ... hell, that would barely scratch the surface. We'd need to start in on confiscating the assets of a few hundred of my friends and associates here on the JREF forums.

Vick has done his time, and beyond that paid a steep price for his crime, which is a balance, and possibly out of proportion, to the grisly acts for which he was convicted. Compare that to the punishment for the jerkoff who nearly beat Reginald Denny to death.

Redemption and a chance to make good is part of what our corrections and justice system attempts to achieve. Tossing a con into a screaming lynch mob can be prevented, and the NFL commissioner is in a perfect position to tell the torches and pitchforks clowns to back off.

I doubt he has the balls.

Dear NFL commissioner, PETA, and pet loving persons of America:

Give the man a break, and a chance to show that he is more than just a caricature of a man, painted as your evil cartoon villain, once a dog ring operator, forever a demon. Lay off with the T-shirts and the hate mail campaigns, and be open to his efforts to reform himself.

As TO put it:
While suffer may not be the term I'd have chosen, paid his penalty is what he did, the inanity of "start your comeback with a 4 game suspension" is where I and TO agree.

(Once again, expect the rapture, I'd not have predicted that agreement. )

Actually, while I am no fan of Vick and like animals, PETA is still a collection of anal orifices with loud mouths and small brains.
