British Chiropractic Association v Simon Singh

http://scepticsbook.com/2009/07/29/the-simon-singh-article-that-caused-all-the-fuss-reproduced-here/

In a worldwide campaign released today, 29th July 2009, the Guardian article originally posted by Simon Singh back in April 2008, is being republished across the world.

The edited version has the libelous sentence removed, but is reproduced to allow the public at large to understand the intentions of Simon’s original post. Given the current legal action currently in progress by the British Chiropractic Association against Simon, this provides insight into the claims for all to see.

Spearheaded by Sense about Science, the intention of campaign is to alert the public to the potential implications of libel or defamation as it pertains to free speech and journalism, not only in the UK but also across the globe.

Below is the article produced in full, as approved by Simon and Sense about Science.

I just checked, but I cannot find any request in any of the links for the public to reproduce the article. Did you breach copyright? If you can show the answer is no then I vote we flood the Internet with this. I mean we join every forum we can find and post it there.

I have Sense About Science's authority to reproduce it.

Everyone, please disseminate it, as others are doing:

Interesting comment from Rawlins's letter:
At a judicial review of NICE’s chronic fatigue syndrome guideline in March this year, at which the judge dismissed the claims in their entirety, he particularly highlighted the importance of health experts to be able to express their opinions without fear of retribution.

ETA: I think the passage he is referring to is in the afterword of this judgment.

Just did a search with these parameters
Search - "Beware the Spinal Trap"
Date - In the last 24 hours.
Result was 52 links. None of which were for this forum. This despite the phrase being in post 657. Could it be because it was in a quote? If so then it could be in many forums and not in my search.

Edit -Changed the search to simon singh Guardian and got 92 results but not this forum.

Edit2. It appears that post 657 cannot be found via google yet another very similar post can be found on another forum. Also later posts in this thread can be found. Very odd.

Are you searching the world or only locally? I get 345 responses (in quotes, past 24H).

Don't know why the forum isn't there. Maybe need more links to it? Strange though.

EDIT: Shows up on page 4 with a "last week" search (and claims the last post was 5 days ago).

Ben Goldacre on the Grauniad website: An intrepid, ragged band of bloggers.

Today the Australian magazine Cosmos, along with a vast number of other blogs and publications, reprinted an article by Simon Singh, in slightly tweaked form, in an act of solidarity.
It arrived in the post yesterday.
It's there!

Advertised on the front cover bottom right corner

Simon Singh
The article that got him sued
by chiropractors - read it here.

It's inside the back cover, a spot usually reserved for guest editorials

Just did my searches again. The first search now gives 110 results. http://www.google.com.au/search?q="Beware+the+Spinal+Trap"&hl=en&num=100&tbs=qdr:d&start=100&sa=N

The second gives 155 results http://www.google.com.au/search?q=simon+singh+Guardian&hl=en&lr=&num=100&tbs=qdr:d&start=100&sa=N.

Please note to get these results you need to go to the last page. Google gives a different result on page 1.

This thread only appears if I extend the search for the last week. Very odd.

Wow this is fantastic stuff, I honestly thought the campaign would start to wain and lose pace a while back - how wrong can a person be? Hopefully the pressure can be kept up and these quacks are made to be a laughing stock.

rjh01: No idea. I get over 800 results from my own search but less than 200 from your link - and when I compare our query strings (the gobbledegook in the URL after searching), they are quite different (I'm on .au too).

COSMOS have published the Spinal Trap article online too at:

Beware the Spinal Trap: COSMOS Magazine

EDIT: I think, judging by Google, the list of article hosts is now far longer than the list on SaS.

One reason is that my search 'omitted some entries very similar to the 180 already displayed.' I suspect your search has included those entries which are duplicates or near duplicates.

The numbers are going up. I may have lost a few links because they have been up more than a day.

Just been reading the comments - vast majority favourable plus a couple of good "magnet therapist" jokes.

John Stone showed up to try to divert the thread into his pet topic, but he got deleted. We've got Presidio with his usual nonsense though.
