The funny thing is, I was linked to the Onion's video a few months ago by a Truther, and when I pointed out that the Onion was satire, I was effectively told I was using ad hominem.

Don't be ashamed or embarrassed. First off, you didn't get sucked in completely. You had the sense to come to a place where you knew you'd find people who know and ask if it was legit. Those are points in your favor and it's a good thing to remember the next time you find something that doesn't seem right.

Second, as you've already seen, The Onion has very high production values which easily rival "real" news networks. And their actors are very good at delivering their lines with a straight face. The Onion has successfully fooled a lot of people. You're no worse off than the rest of us.
