He has made no secret of his love of women but the sex scandal surrounding Silvio Berlusconi is now threatening to topple him, as more claims emerge of the systematic recruitment of young women paid to attend private parties at his homes in Rome and Sardinia.

With weeks to go before he hosts the G8 summit the Italian Prime Minister, 72, is facing new allegations, including claims by a Bari escort girl who says that she has recorded footage of herself in the billionaire’s bedroom. Now another woman has come forward, this time claiming that she was paid to attend the Prime Minister’s private parties after going through a hostess service, allegedly operated by a local businessman.

well when you cant prove his Mafia connections and corruption, this must do it.

Italian Politics: The Gift that keeps on giving. Just about every other country on earth can look at Italy and say "Our Politics might be bad, but they are not as batcrap crazy as Italy's".

The problem is that for Italian men this just shows that Berlusconi is quite a man, and for Italian women.. it just shows that Berlusconi is quite a man.

Well, of course that's not true for everyone, but unfortunately it seems to be true for a majority.

Well, looking at the woman in question - and contrasting that with Berlusconi's age, while triggering a moment of revulsion at the age gap, also triggered an involuntary "atta boy" and feelings of envy.

Kind of normal reactions I think.

Of course this is completely inappropriate for a sitting head of state, but still... damn... part of my male side says "well, if you're 72 and can pull that off - good work - there's not likely to be too many years left for you!"

Real men don't use an escort service. Just shows that he's rich, not studly.

I have to at least give Sarkozy props on that count.

Still find nothing to admire in Berlusconi. I see him and think what this country would be like if Newt had money.

You have to admire his virility.

:duck:

ETA:

Are his sexual peccadillos the main problem here?

Who cares? Unless we are Puritans or devout Catholics.

I don't care about his private life or sexual relationships, I care about his performance of his job and policies.

He's a moderate Fascist at heart, and apparently only magages to stay in power due to the fact that he bought out most of the Italian press and can suppress any decent reporting on his short comings.

And I still say that his virility is in question. He has nothing over Dennis Kucinich on that count.

In his defense, that chick was smokin hot.

So he can pay a higher class of hooker than I could. Could he actually get a chick that hot just on his charm if he were an average citizen otherwise?

Somehow, I doubt it.

I can't verify that - it's Clinton all over again down there.

Slight lack of credible oposition. Only other figures of note on the right are either too geographicaly limited or too outright fascist. The left is a complete mess whith out any real posibility of seriously uniteing behind one figure.

There is also a lack of access to the media, and hostile media.

Berlusconi owns just about all the commercial radio and TV stations

True but print media are haveing fun and the net is still there. If the left were actualy able to unite or some other worthwhile figure were to appear on the right I doubt his control of the media would be enough. However both those events seem unlikely for the moment.

Italians watch TV, they usually don't read serious newspapers.
Berlusconi owns most TV channels and they show game shows, human interest news and astrologers.
Italy has a very bad internet penetration and Italians mostly speak just Italian.

It is almost unbelievable in a modern Western country, but most Italians are actually shielded from critical news reports about Berlusconi.

Remember when he just left Angela Merkel hanging while he was on his mobile during the NATO summit? That went all over the world, but most Italians haven't seen it and actually think that old Silvio is making quite good impression on the international scene.
