For fear that they might say that they think that science and religion are not reconcilable in their view, NCSE has a habit of preferring Kevin Miller over other atheists. Miller is great, but the NCSE does play the fluffy friendly golden retriever instead of the bulldog.
Evolution is already demonized. Science and materialism are already the enemy. Why not show a more diverse face of science?

This is the reason why we have to keep dealing with woo, whether its religion, alternative medicine, psychics, etc... too much of desire to "understand" or "debate" or "educate" and no direct confrontation. There is nothing to "understand." There is nothing to "debate." (A is A. You can not deny reality.) You can't "educate" someone who's too stupid or delusional to learn.

What scares me are fanatics. Fanatics are people who paint things in black and white, insist on grandiose causes and grand gestures. They insist that the enemy is stupid and dangerous. They refer to the destruction of society. They are certain there is no value in understanding what is 'wrong' to them and that their cause is 'right.' They believe their cause gains paramount importance, that to declare other issues more important is to give aid and shelter to the enemy.
There are fanatical Christians. Fanatical Muslims. Fanatical Republicans. Fanatical Libertarians. Fanatical environmentalists. Fanatical PETA members, fanatical Communists, fanatical members of any stripe and for any cause. I'm sure you've grasped where I'm going by now.
You know what? They scare people, because these people lack a sense of reason and proportion. Reason. You see that? That's my 'god.' And these fanatics? They don't necessarily do their cause any favors.
So tell me what you want to do, and I will show up to tear it down, because goddamn it, I like this cause.

Who's ******* running away? All you did was make some in some tired and cliche equivocation between atheists and and fundies.
From time to time US has mouthed off about how any atheist who shows any sort of balls and guts (e.g. Dawkins, Hitchens, etc) toward the religionists and pointing out why the are both wrong and dangerous are "militant." I'm sick of it. I'm sick of it because that's EXACTLY what atheism, and by extension, skepticism needs: Balls and guts, not mealy-mouthed platitudes and illusions of civility. Sitting in our proverbial closets and keeping our criticism of religion confined to freethought meetings certainly haven't helped fight delusion in the world.
What do I think should be done? I haven't the foggiest notion! Do you have any ideas that DOESN'T include bending over and figuratively sucking off everyone who professes a belief in "god?" Please, tell me!
I will say this: Whatever the solution is, I don't care if the other sides' pwecious wittle feewings are hurt the process. I don't care if I'm dashing their deeply held beliefs. People need to know that A is A even if you have to rub their noses in it! If they don't like it... well, that's why we have mental institutions. We put people who can't face cold, hard, reality in them until they can or they stop breathing.
Now, go ahead, pillory the mean old "militant" atheist for questioning the unquestionable wisdom of US! I don't ******* care!

Mark, have you been seeing a counselor or something for your anger issues? I have no idea whether Robster was raped by a priest or something, but I know your anger is rooted in your familial ties and what I concede constitutes emotional abuse from them, but dude, seriously, that sort of pent up fury is going to give you a heart attack at some point.
