Gay couple = successful parents!

there goes my bigoted view of beeing gay is unnatural :)

I don't get this bit:
The zoo flew in four females in a bid to get the endangered birds to reproduce - but quickly abandoned the scheme after causing outrage among gay rights activists, who accused it of interfering in the animals' behaviour.
Surely they were only interfering if they limited access to the females only - one of each gender per container. Why would providing females and therefore enabling them to have a choice be interfering in their behaviour? How do they know they weren't just stuck for choice? Are gay activists anti-choice? Did they wait to see if the males reacted to the females or not?

I have an image of some of these poor penguins standing around the day after the females were taken away staring at each other in major dejection, all hope of hetero action and raising a family of their own taken away from them and back with the lads again. And how did the females feel?

On the plus side - it is good to see them raising these young, particularly as it's an endangered species, but if they deprive potentially straight penguins of the ability to mate with females they are reducing the changes of the species survivial, surely?

Gay couple = succesful parents!

Not at all surprising. New research shows that children raised by two lesbian (human) parents have significantly fewer psychological problems later in life than children raised by traditional families. Link in danish:http://ekstrabladet.dk/nyheder/samfund/article1175582.ece

The children were followed from 1992-2008. In that period 5% of the children raised by heterosexual parents were treated for depression, anorexia or personality disorders. This only applied to <2% of the 387 children raised in lesbian families.

The Bremerhaven Zoo can expect some very robust penguins in the future.

These were penguins who otherwise showed homosexual tendencies, certainly not the norm. I am certain that this behavior will not reduce species survival any more than homosexuality in humans through the centuries has deprived our population.

In an environment where they are deprived of females ... do you not see why I would query this?

Humans aren't an already endangered species.

OK, I'll admit to being a trifle touched by this cute story.

Glad to see the guys doing such a great parenting job - after a rather rocky start:
Three pairs of male penguins had been seen ... trying to hatch offspring from stones.

Fine... I'll be the one who says it....

'Gay penguins' rear adopted chick

The title with that pic is funny.:D

If you ask me it is not like a heterosexual relationship at all.

"Since the chick arrived, they have been behaving just as you would expect a heterosexual couple to do. The two happy fathers spend their days attentively protecting, caring for and feeding their adopted offspring." is totally unnatural.

What it should say is that "Since the chick arrived, they have been behaving just as you would expect a heterosexual couple to do. One has spent their days attentively protecting, caring for and feeding their adopted offspring. The other has been out on a week long bender under the auspices of wetting the chick’s head."

That's a good question. As I read it, people were protesting adding females to the cage. Why? Would it ruin it if they turned out to not actually be 'gay'?

Thank you!
I was starting to wonder if I'd lost part of my brain and was missing something in the tale that everyone else was 'getting'.

Penguins are gay

A zoo in Germany has reported that a male penguin couple has successfully hatched an egg and is now rearing the chick.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8081829.stm

I wasn't aware that homosexual penguins exist. The fact that they chose to hatch the egg didn't surprise me simply because male and female penguins take turns sitting on the egg so this would be no different. What was really interesting was that even when the male penguins were introduced to female penguins, they preferred to stay with their male companion.

I'm not surprised at all. Homosexuality is present in many, many gendered animal species.

Where did you find that information?

We are straying into science here, but I wonder whether same-sex mating and parental behaviour is more common in species that tend to pair-bond, and have minimal sex differences in terms of appearance and behaviour - seems a plausible hypothesis.

Would be interesting to study (and not because I think it would throw any light on human sexual behaviour).

Damn penguins, threatening my Church Sanctioned Marriage(TM) and trying to convert my kids! Get me my shotgun...

Does that about cover it, thaiboxerken?

Upon being informed of the news, Elton John congratulated Z and Vielpunkt on their civil partnership. Elton was all set to release an updated version of "Gay Seal" when he was informed that these Antarctica inhabitants were penguins.
