Looks like someone else has a new book....

"Osama bin Laden is the world’s best-known terrorist, but how much of what we think we know about him is real? David Griffin examines this question in greater depth than any previous author. Based on the evidence, he suggests that bin Laden may have been dead for some time. If so, this means that some covert operators have been fabricating tapes to keep Osama bin Laden alive in the public's imagination.”---Terrell E. Arnold, former deputy director of the US State Department Office of Counterterrorism; author of A World Less Safe

The US’s political discourse and foreign policy in recent years has been based on the assumption that Osama bin Laden is still alive. George W. Bush promised as president that he would get Osama bin Laden “dead or alive” and has been widely criticized for failing to do so. The US’s present military escalation in Afghanistan is said to be necessary to “get Osama bin Laden.” The news media regularly announce the appearance of new “messages from bin Laden.” But what if Osama bin Laden died in December 2001—which is the last time a message to or from him was intercepted?

In this book, David Ray Griffin examines the evidence for the claim—made by everyone from former CIA agent Robert Baer to Oliver North—that bin Laden is surely no longer with us. He analyzes the purported messages from bin Laden and finds that, as many have suspected, they do not provide evidence of bin Laden’s existence after 2001. This leads naturally to the question: if Osama bin Laden did indeed die in 2001, how and why have dozens of “messages from bin Laden” appeared since then?

Griffin’s meticulous analysis supports above all one simple and urgent conclusion: if Osama bin Laden is dead, the US should not be using its troops and treasure to hunt him down.

Not that I've read the book, but any intelligence analyst with half a brain knows that a dead Osama Bin Laden isn't something his close followers (however few they are) would keep a secret.

Al-Qaeda have a history of announcing the deaths of their own operatives as fast as possible. It allows them to place the first spin on the death and announce that the operative has been "martyred" (a much different concept to the "killed by US forces" the media will eventually report).

The age-old "Bush didn't want Bin Laden dead because it would mean we'd have to end the War on Terror" argument is, quite frankly, pathetic. Bin Laden is no longer in operational command of 'al Qaeda'. Furthermore, it is also arguable that "al Qaeda" currently exists solely as a social movement, as opposed to the structured organization it used to be. US forces have spent 8 years decimating the organization, and as Marc Sageman would argue - they have been effective at dismantling any coherent structure within the ranks of al Qaeda.

It wouldn't take much convincing from politicians to assure the public that it would be unwise to cease the War on Terror simply because Bin Laden has been eliminated. A capture/kill of Bin Laden is something Bush would have absolutely loved on his legacy.

I agree. I have not read the book, nor do I intend to read the book. I just got an email from Griffin this afternoon announcing it, so figured I would beat the truthers to the punch.

What the hell? You correspond with David Ray Griffin. Can you ask him when he plans on addressing Mackey's whitepaper.

I "correspond" with him, too. I gave him a copy after he e-mailed me and asked for it, so I sent him a copy. Last I ever heard from him.

I think the answer to that question is "never." Draw your own conclusions.

Oh, I would not call it 'corresponding'. More like I made it on his spam-o-matic list. He was of course on my infamous 'kiss my grits' email I sent to TM leaders last year, so I don't suspect he would respond to any queries from me.

I saw this mentioned on 9-11 Blogger the other day and was surprised because in his April speech at Boston University he talked about an upcoming book on WTC-7. Apparently he's trying to get every bit of milk from the cow before it keels over.

he's been dead for a long time. His kidneys could not take the stress at Tora Bora.

No your wrong, if he was dead they would give him the matyr treatment.
there was nothing wrong with his kidneys.

Imo, he is living in luxury in a secret safe mansion in islamabad, pakistan.

Conspiracists are still going on with this "dialysis" nonsense? You've actually gone backwards from where you were last time I was here.

Osama Bin Laden is most likely residing in North-West Pakistan. The best publicly available intelligence estimates place him in or around Waziristan, most likely with a small network of very, very close associates.

Again, as I said earlier in the thread, anyone with anything greater than the most basic knowledge of al Qaeda knows that the jihadis would be the first to announce his death - especially if he died of natural causes.

He's dead as a Doo Doo.

bin Laden is as dead as a doornail.

There in no evidence the he is in Islamabad, but the paucity of recent communications from Bin Laden may be evidence he feels comfortable and secure in his current hiding spot.

Whenever Bin Laden sends out a message, it's a security risk. If the courier is caught, that could lead the authorities back to Bin Laden. In the past, Bin Laden has minimized this risk by moving to another location the courier doesn't know about. If you were hiding in a really nice place, would you want to move?

sure it is. I think you've watched one too many cops N robbers movies.

DRG - snake oil salesman, and perhaps the best one in the movement. A man has gotta feed da kids, and what better way then accusing innocent men and women of covering up mass murder...am I right, am I right???

Even if Osama is dead, it's not like Al Quida will vanish. He is and always was more the charismic leader, the actual planning and carrying out of operations were done by others. It would still be a danger.

Right, getting Osama does nothing to destroy the threat the other 10,000 angry Islamists with rockets and explosives pose.
