Two Catholics Spew Lies about Galileo, Angels & Demons Starts Friday

By Rolf Lindgren, Defender of Galileo

Tomorrow, Friday, May 15, Ron Howard’s new movie Angels & Demons will appear, starring Tom Hanks. This movie follows up Howard’s previous film Da Vinci Code, both based on novels by Dan Brown.

The Angels & Demons movie is under attack by a couple of Catholics, Joseph Dias of the Catholic Secular Forum with help from Bill Donahue of the USA Catholic League.

You can read their hit piece here:

My short piece will identify several lies and distortions found in that article about Galileo Galilei (1564-1642). Primary author Dias does not seem to understand that Brown’s book is a novel that contains a mixture of fiction, myths, legends, and historical facts, much like the Bible is a mixture of fiction, myths, legends and historical facts. If Dias had confined himself to sticking to facts about the historical Galileo, then I would be standing mute at this time. But Dias’ lies & distortions about Galileo are presented as facts, and need to be corrected in the interests of history.

Note the handle of the person writing the OP.

Apparently, self identification with a long dead astronomer is strong within that one.

DR

He claims to be a direct descendent of Galileo.
If you buy that, I have some ocean front property in Nebraska you might be interested in..........

And you don't have to be a Catholic to think that Dan Brown novels are, both from a literary and accuracy point of view are total crap.

I thought he claimed to be a clone of Galileo.

If, by fact, you mean the bibble got some place names right and correctly named Caesar Augustus as a ruler of Rome at one time, I can accept historical facts as technically true.

It was a **** book, it will be a **** movie.

Who cares?

Ya, who would want to read an exciting classic of literature that explores eternal human themes like good vs. evil, science vs. religion, the individual vs. the State, experiment vs. authority, the nature of truth, liberty, and justice, and the legacy of Galileo?

Lots of people. But if people want that, why are they reading a Dan Brown potboiler instead?

Do you ever have anything good to say about another human being? From what I've seen, you are all negativity.

Brown's book is a timeless classic that will go down in history on par with Huckleberry Finn.

I have feeling that this is the equivalent of proclaiming to be a Vanilla Ice fan at a Dr Dre pool party.

What I ask is why can't they read a GOOD potboiler ?
Brown's novel is crap from the pure thriller point of view.
I have been reading a lot of pulp fiction from the 30's..mainly "The Shadow" and "Doc Savage" reprints coming from Sanctum Publications...and they are vastly superior in every way to what Brown gives us.

I've never read Dan Brown's books, but based on this post alone, I know they're garbage.

I read The Da Vinci Code. It was crap. The writing style was that of Nancy Drew or The Hardy Boys, and I expect better than that outside of the juvenile section of the library.

Angels & Demons is a lot better than the Da Vinci Code.

"A more appropriate, if somewhat heretical, proposal for time keeping (rather than "BC" [Before Christ] and "AD" [ Anno Domini]), might be "BG" (Before Galileo) and "AG" (After Galileo), when empirical investigation or science as a means of acquiring knowledge began in earnest. If we arbitrarily allow that 1564 AD (the year of Galileo Galilei's birth) is calibrated to 0 AG, then today's date, February 7, 2003; 9:00 PM GMT would be represented as 439.02.07.21:00:00 AG."
