Boat shaped formations on Mt. Ararat.

I was reading The National Enquirer and they said Noahs ark had been found. There actually is a rock formation that I have to admit is shaped remarkably like a boat with the same dimensions as the biblical ark. In fact there are two boat like natural rock formations with the same dimensions. Could these formations possibly be the basis for the description of Noahs ark? I mean these formations have never been boats only ancient rocks. Could some ancient jewish author have seen these things and assumed they were boats? I can sure understand why.

It's possible. The point of the story, though, is not that a bunch of animals and a few people got in a boat and floated around on the inundated earth while everything else (except, one presumes, aquatic life) died.

The story is about obeisance. It's a parable designed to instruct.

So focusing on the literal, provable, evidenciary aspects of the story are, in a word, pointless.

If you drive along US 50 from Tahoe to Sacramento, you'll find a rock formation that looks like someone bending over and grabbing their ankles. What does that one suggest?

Wood does not petrify on top of mountains. Wood petrifies when it is buried deep in sediment where chemical changes can occur. This is yet another ignorant and pathetic attempt by fundamentalists to try to borrow some science to fit their myth. It never fits.

How do you know the story is not literal? How do you decide which bible stories are literal and which are not?

Just going from memory, the main 'boat' was indeed largely covered in.. I guess, sediment, though the outline was still visible. Much of the sediment was removed as a result of an earthquake, I forget which year that was.. some time in the 1980s or 1990s.
That revealed the 'boat' better.
 
Oh, wow! I haven't been into the "the Ark is real" territory in a long time!! What happened to the samples taken by brave explorers of the timber poking out of the ice --seen in aerial photographs??

What does Google Ararat show?

The National Enquirer is a lame publication but it was what was there and I felt the need to read something. The Enquirer did provide two excellant photos of these formations. Like I suggested in my initial post they do look remarkably like ships. The fact that there are two of them dismisses the Ark story but I believe that an ancient Jew or other resident saw these formations and came to the conclusion that they had been ships and built a story around them.
 
"Telling lies for God" by Ian Plimer deals with this very well, amongst other examples of biblical woo. He's a Professor of Geology.

Sediment on top of a mountain? The boat was floating when it stopped, so if it was covered in sediment, that implies a greater flood after the biblical flood. Ridiculous claims inspire ridiculous "evidence".

The National Enquirer has been known to doctor photos and create them out of whole cloth. At the risk of committing an ad hominem, the newspaper published photos of an elderly Jack Kennedy meeting an elderly Elvis Presley.
