Michael Dennett, published Bigfoot skeptic, has died

Cryptofool Coleman writes:

But one perhaps could be skeptical of Dennett’s own lack of a biological background or knowledge-base. For example, regarding the ivory-billed woodpecker, he said some of his insights issued from the fact he had “observed three species of woodpeckers adapt to a backyard feeder.”

“But one perhaps could be skeptical of Dennett’s own lack of a biological background or knowledge-base. ”

This is my problem with practically all crypto-skeptics - particularly with scientists, when they pronounce “skeptical” views for which their training should tip them to take a closer look than that.

“Bottom line is, they don’t have a body” doesn’t cut it for a scientist, who should be able to come up with a variety of plausible reasons why not. A body is proof; its absence is in no way evidence-against.

But that aside. People like Dennett keep the discussion from veering over into the opposite camp, which I have found listening to it can be even worse. Skepticism without conclusive evidence is one thing. Buying in with no evidence is quite another, as Dennett and his compatriots do serve to remind us.

RIP.

Hey, morons, not the time.

Michael Dennett was a great writer and skeptic. I enjoyed his review of Jeff Meldrum's book:

59 is far too soon.:(

DWA's post kind of annoys me. Absence of a large gorilla living in the most developed continent is evidence that it is a myth. Yet DWA considers himself a "True Skeptic". He is so full of it, its pathetic

I'll bet you do, it was probably today when you googled his name.

I knew about him before 2004, and I have read his articles on Bigfoot at CSICOP for a while. I don't think its appropriate for you to make shots at me at a time like this.

Lil' mak,

I don't think that it's right that you make crap up when a man dies just to try and elevate whatever position you think you have here.

You, and your friends, are frauds and trolls. This is about as low as a person can get.

I didn't know Dennett and I didn't follow much of his writings, but I respect his life and I won't pretend that I think it's a personal crisis to me.
Evidently you, and your friends, see this as another opportunity to try and wrangle your way into the good favors of some here.

I don't believe you, and your friends, ever even heard of him before today.

All of DWA's posts annoy me. They annoyed me like you're posts used to annoy me not so long ago. You remember why they were annoying, right? I'm not picking on you, just pointing out the obvious. In the very small window of time I had before I was completely muzzled I challenged DWA to come to the JREF and debate in a an environment where we could do so without interference. He declined. I call Colonel Sanders.

My advice to you is that it is probably too early for you to be giving harsh criticisms to those who claim to be "true skeptics". Not because you've aapparently abandoned being a Bigfoot enthusiast while he is as indoctrinated as they come, just because people who will be less inclined to accept your newfound skepticism will make posts with words like "Whaaa??"

Hey, I don't doubt that. I was reading Bigfoot books since I was wee as well. But considering you are 18 years old now and before 2004 is at least five years, that would make you around 12 or 13 years old at the time. That would be awfully young to be reading Dennett. The other thing is that you didn't seem to retain anything he wrote. Nevertheless, you were making weird CSICOP references since you came here. Makes me feel weird to be responsible for a kid giving up on Bigfoot after so long. Good weird. Don't get me wrong.

Anyway, little mak, l want to talk about the good things Michael Dennett did and not you right now. I think Loren Coleman and wannabe's like DWA are douchebags for using the occassion of someone's passing to talk smack. Let's move along.

Mike Dennett was a careful, critical thinker who always double-checked his information, and was never shy to call out hoaxers and frauds. The little interaction I had directly with him was an enriching and fulfilling experience, and I am glad to have known him, if only through correspondence. He was a tremendous example of someone who clearly loved Bigfoot and all the fun stuff surrounding the legend, but didn't fall for the goofy antics of those who tried to promote their bogus wares for a buck.
His passing leaves a significant gap in the realm of articulate, published, well-informed, critical assessment of Bigfoot "evidence."

Very well said!

You mean like your lack of those things?

For example, regarding the ivory-billed woodpecker, he said some of his insights issued from the fact he had “observed three species of woodpeckers adapt to a backyard feeder.”

Despite my not having any real support for the survival of ivory-billed woodpeckers (I personally don't care about birds at all), I do have to say this: A once-known type of small bird going unnoticed is far more realistic than an unknown species of giant apes going unnoticed.

In the very small window of time I had before I was completely muzzled I challenged DWA to come to the JREF and debate in a an environment where we could do so without interference. He declined. I call Colonel Sanders.

Ah yes, the classic "loose sweater" post. DWA also chickened out when I invited him to visit the JREF.

Michael Dennett remembered

Michael Dennett who died in May was also the co-founder of the Northwest Skeptics organization in 1984-1985. His involvement with both CSICOP and in forming a regional skeptical group --- I believe at that time only the third in the nation --- showed he was well ahead of his time.

As the other co-founder of Northwest Skeptics I can assure everyone he was a gentle man who loved his family and was respected by his employer. He was a diplomat first, a skeptic second.
