Okey so they've been effectively seperated for years but the amount of drama being generated is impressive.

The wife of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has confirmed that she will file for divorce.

Veronica Lario reportedly said she could not be with a man who "consorted with minors" after her husband attended a female friend's 18th birthday party.

Berlusconi is claiming his political opponets put her up to it and is demanding an apollogy.

The issue of Berlusconi's European Parliament candidate choices is also getting dragged in.

It has been my understanding that Italians use government as a form of entertainment, and have for ages.

Thus, Silvio is most certainly doing his job. :D As is his fair wife.

(Wow, pretty!)

True but they don't normaly involve 18 year olds who have posed semi nude (run a google image search on Noemi Letizia)

He's worth 6 billion dollars? What do they pay politicians in Italy?

I believe he was rich before being elected.

Anyway, this kind of reminds me of the old Roman republic. You had to be rich to have a go at politics. Going up the 'cursus honorum' was staggeringly expensive. Many Roman nobles went into debt to try to secure a consulship. Then they would go to a province. Use the legions rape, plunder, and tax in order to get rich again. You would think that Italian politicians would have noticed that the latter option is no longer available.

There is/was the odd rumor that the only reason he became a politician, was to influence things to his advantage. Of course, it didn't hurt him that the moment he became Prime Minister, a number of corruption charges against him were dropped

While not wishing to undermine claims about Tony Blair's friend's utter moral depravity and corruption, isn't it normal nowadays for eighteen years old to post pictures of themselves on Facebook and elsewhere, fully dressed for the beach?

I don't know. All my facebook friends are balding guys in their forties.

I don't think it is normal for them to sell those pics to magazines.

I remember someone asking Umberto Eco what he felt about America. His response was "A man who lives in the country of Berlusconi can not judge".
