"UFO spotters are claiming they have spotted an alien skull on Mars after NASA beamed back satellite images from the planet.

An oddly shaped space boulder appears to show eye sockets and a nose leading to speculation it might be a Martian skull."

So, there's absolutely no evidence for human habitation, yet somehow there's a human on Mars. Brilliant!

I can't even see how anyone can see a skull from that image. :con2:

We are looking at the top of the skull. The eye sockets are on the far right edge, like the skull is facing down.

But that makes the back of the skull extremely flat. I could see having the top flat, but the back of the skull? How are you going to set your ashtray on that?

You say it is spotted, it looks more mottled to me.

Wow, this conspiracy is made of fail.

At least with 9/11 stuff, or even the original martian face image, you get some crackpots who really believe what they are saying. I have a hard time imagining anyone who isn't actually crazy thinking that this thing isn't a rock. Thanks for the link though, it was a laugh. :)

This is a rock. An untalented child could do much better. I have to say this though. Wouldn't it be exciting if an alien civilization did exist on mars. If fate had been kinder and Mars had remained wet and intelligent life had evolved there wouldn't it be exciting to get to know them? Say they were behind us a bit technologically. They were sailing ships, plowing fields with alien farm animals, writing books and making discoveries. It didn't happen though. The only Martians will be humans when we colonise the planet. Too bad. We missed out.

If I squint really hard thinking "Skull skull skull" I see exactly the opposite. It's resting on the neck looking upwards and to the left.

Wait.. "Skull skull skull".. Yes, I think that's it.

ETA: 300th post. Yay!

No really. They buried this martian dude to spy on our craft, and left only the head sticking out of the sand. He's intended to look just like a rock but the two holes for the eyes prove it isn't.

No, wait, the inner voices just told me the full story. The hollow rock actually connects to a vast underground labyrinth of tunnels and a troop of Martians take turns sticking their heads into the hollow rock and reporting the equivalent of martian 24/7.

This is so obvious.

HHHELLLLOOOOO?

Just go stick a robot arm in one of the eye holes and see if there is a yelp.

I was curious about this and other pareidolia, so I introduced the idea to my students today. We looked at this rock, the famous face on Mars image, the virgin Mary on a grilled cheese sandwich, and listened to the EVP mentioned in this thread. (It supposedly says, "I'm here.")

I showed them the images, without leading titles (renamed image files image1, 2, 3) and played the sound from the video without showing the video or listening to the leadup to it.

The kids know I'm a skeptic and so their answers may have been influenced by that knowledge one way or another. I had them write what they saw or heard on a piece of paper without talking to one another. I should have collected and tallied the votes anonymously, but I didn't have the time to spend, so we just did a show of hands.

The results, out of 26 high school juniors and seniors:
The rock:
13 votes for rock
5 for skull
5 for alien skull
1 for mouse head
2 no vote

The Martian face:
26 votes for a head
When shown the more recent image:
26 votes for a hill

The virgin on grilled cheese:
16 votes for Marilyn Monroe or Madonna (not the madonna...)
8 votes for a woman
2 no vote

The EVP I mentioned: (I played 0:36-0:38, the low volume version, then 0:48-0:50, the louder playback.)
14 heard some version of 'a weird noise'
11 heard someone talking
1 heard "I'm here."

We then talked about other similar phenomena (hearing someone say our name when we are at home alone and the like...) It was an interesting discussion.

I see Captain Ahab in his whaleboat, getting ready to throw his harpoon at Moby-Dick, with the Pequod in the background.

Or Yankee Stadium.

I just see a rock. I cannot image how someone could think that is a skull by any stretch of the imagination.

I can see at least three rocks, or small collections of rocks, in that image that I can imagine to be skull or face - like.

Then again, there is lino on the floor in the toilet of the house I grew up in that had a faux marble pattern on it. I could find about 8 faces in that, not counting repeats...

One looked like Bud Abbott, another like Santa Claus.

We are programmed genetically to see and recognise faces. It is part of being human.

However, when we start believing that the faces we see in random patterns ARE faces, we move out of the realm of "hey, that's interesting / fun / coincidental" and into the realm of bat **** crazy.

It's obviously not a martian skull. Martians have much larger brain cavities and their eyes are much bigger and set further apart. Everyone knows that!
