I asked a question about this video on yahoo answers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwgRLRZe14U&feature=channel_page

SomeonE, Said something to the effect that "America has kicked racism out" or something like that. She also tied the confederate flag as a symbol of racism. SHe said she was from West Virginia, and what she said ticked me off.
The civil war had very little to do with slavery. The main catalyst was the Morill Tariff. The confederacy was fighting for states rights and to be an independant state. Less than 1% of all southerners could even afford slaves. It was being fazed out on its own. Meanwhile the North had some states that allowed slaves which included Indiana, Conneticut, and New York. THe Union was the aggressor and at fault for the Civil War. Because of the morill tarriff they had to pay 80% of the tax even though they were only 30% of the total population.

THE CONFEDERATE FLAG IS A SYMBOL OF HERITAGE NOT RACIST HATRED.

Heritage for that *better part* of the USA. The REAL America!

I was born and raised in Ohio. My mother moved to Mississippi, and I'd visit her there, every summer. What I found most amusing was how people there would call me a yank and they'd go on about how they were "rebels"... This was all new to me.. I found it interesting how hung up southerners are over the Civil War, to this day..

Seriously, why can't you just let the flag go, and catch up with 2009? We have a nice big flag full of 50 stars.. some of them are even for your rebel states.

I have to agree with debunker at least as far as the confederate flag is concerned. I think labelling the confederate flag racist on its own is silly and overly PC.

Joethejuggler- Am i going to have to bring a history book to your house and show you?

What kind of history book?
I have seen plenty of history books that are pure crap.
And the Neo Confederate "The South Was Right" crap is among the worst.

Lies, lies, and more lies.

By 1850, slavery was ABOLISHED in Connecticut, New York, and Indiana.

Heritage my ass!! This is about bigotry, bigotry, and more bigotry. And treason to the Republic.

Parky- They still had slaves. Did they not? I never said when slavery was abolished in those states. The south was going to abolish slavery on its own, and it was well under way to being abolished. Like i said; less than 1%.

It is not treason to talk about sucession. States rights were built into the 10th amendment. The federalist papers. If Obama issues a large tax increase i guarantee you history will repeat itself.

read the link. after 1850..these three states had NO SLAVES.

therefore, your statement is a lie!!

And furthermore, it is treasonous to freedom and democracy and liberty, talk about Seccession in order to keep slaves. That's what the Civil War was all about. The South wanted to keep slavery, and they new Emancipation was on its way.

Taxes? My ass.

States do have rights. No one is doubting that. But they do NOT have the right to simply secede without the consent of the rest of the Republic.

Please point to the section of the United States Constitution which discusses secesion.

Can't find? That's cause it ain't there. We are ONE nation.

Parky- my statement was "Meanwhile the North had some states that allowed slaves which included Indiana, Conneticut, and New York." I never said when slavery in these states were abolished. Also i forgot to mention that lincoln was not on the ballot in the southern states the year he got elected.

As a Civil War Buff, I have to deal with these Neo Confederate kooks all the time. The only thing keeping them from the title of champion Crackpot Historians are the Holocaust Deniers.

of course most of the states had slavery at some time!!!

who the hell cares? we abolished it 35 years before you guys fought a war to preserve it.

let me ask you this, Johnny Rebel, if the South seceded again, would blacks and Hispanics have FULL civil and legal rights?

how would the New Confederate States of America differ from the USA?

And had you been familiar with history you would have read something akin to this:
The coexistence of a slave-owning South with an increasingly anti-slavery North made conflict likely. Lincoln did not propose federal laws against slavery where it already existed, but he had, in his 1858 House Divided Speech, expressed a desire to "arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction."[1] Much of the political battle in the 1850s focused on the expansion of slavery into the newly created territories.[2][3][4] All of the organized territories were likely to become free-soil states, which increased the Southern movement toward secession. Both North and South assumed that if slavery could not expand it would wither and die.

Do you have a link which you can provide to source this? My understanding of the civil war is that both the Confederate and the Union sides were justifying their respective positions through different interpretations of Thomas Jefferson. Proponents of slavery often contended that among the rights of the states was the protection of many of its social institutions, often to justify slavery LINK

You might also want to read up on the confederate position for the protection of slave property and the precedent the Dred Scott Decision set for that basis.
