Billboards have gone up for a month letting atheists in the Metroplex they are not alone.

There's no comments on that story, but when I get time I'm going to check other sites for commentary. I'm sure the local fundies will be outraged. There were two negative calls to KDFW Fox 4's Viewers Voice segment tonight.

Such a seemingly innocent billboard. What in the hell is there to be offended about?

I live in San Francisco, where atheists need not be quiet, so maybe I take my ability to speak for granted; but only a 30 minute drive east out into the valley near Sacramento and Stockton, one quickly finds numerous religious billboards. One billboard looked JUST like that one, with a blue sky, white clouds and even the phrase was similar. It read "Looking for purpose? You're not alone"

You know, all this nonsense about religious sensitivity is getting extremely annoying, and from BOTH camps (granted, it seems religious people complain about it more than atheists/non-religious people do).

I must commend the authors of this ad for actually refraining from ridicule and making their target audience other atheists.

In my eyes, any drama that ensues from this will be squarely pitted on the shoulders of the religious who file the complaints.

That made me smile; the same message could have been posted by any of the religious groups...

Absolutely! This is the right approach IMO, raising awareness of atheism without actively creating controversy. I would prefer this message over the one on the atheist bus campaign
( http://www.atheistbus.org.uk/faq/ ).

The nice thing with atheists is we don't have different skin colour, accents or any other external clues to readily distinguish us from the majority. Thus, as long as American atheists shut up, the bigots can pretend they don't exist, except in downtrodden third world dictatorships such as North Korea. Billboards reminding American atheists that they're not alone shatters this illusion.

My guess, anyway.

Agreed.

Oh dear ... the horror

Shocking! LTE from the DMN.
Re: "Local atheists turn their eyes to the sky -- Organizer says signs aim to comfort nonbelievers, not convert the religious," Wednesday Metro.
What is the world coming to when you see billboards that say, "Don't Believe in God? You're not alone"?
Terry McDonald is exercising his freedom of speech but with America as one nation under God, how could we let this happen? "In God we trust" is printed on our money. Our country was founded on God, and for this billboard to stand anywhere in this country is a mockery of our founding fathers.

And there's some very interesting comments here.

Is it just me or would you rather have it say 'Don't believe in A god'

I think it might be time to get a billboard up here in Massachusetts!

Nothing. That's the incredible part, it's as harmless as a sign saying "Jews in Dallas area? You are not alone", or "gay in the Metroplex? You are not alone". It's so obviously a sign meant to comfort a minority group, tell its members to dare come out of the closet and be themselves, give them an encouraging pat on the back to help them accept themselves for what they are.

But it's got "atheist" in it, so the masses charge it like a red flag.

Free Republic. 'nuff said.
