The Melbourne City Council this morning unveiled a pan to dam the Yarra river at Southbank to "stop the sea getting in".

A couple of good ones here.

The best one was Melbourne's Lord Mayor announcing that he planned to dam the Yarra River, in downtown Melbourne, to protect against sea level rises and to provide fishing opportunities for patrons of our casino. The response from greenies was priceless "biosphere destruction" etc etc.

On ABC radio, Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle announced a plan to dam the Yarra, which he admitted may flood Scotch College but would protect Melbourne's parks by maintaining fresh water levels in the river. Talkback callers responded furiously.

Another one from the state government was that Melbourne was bidding to stage the "Running of the Bulls" on the basis that Pamploma has had a good run since the 1300s.

Better this year than previously.

Jerusalem --- April 1, 2009 ..... In a stunning move, which has caught global leaders by surprise, Iran and Israel signed a peace treaty today in Jerusalem. Under the cover of darkness, Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived at Israel's Ben-Gurion Airport just after midnight and was greeted by Israeli President Shimon Peres. The two then drove to the Prime Minister's office in Jerusalem where in his last act as Prime Minister Ehud Olmert signed several copies of the peace treaty. US President Obama had secretly flown into Jerusalem to serve as a witness to the historic, early morning ceremony.

Guardian goes Twitter only
http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/blogs/index.cfm?entryid=113679&blogid=4

After 188 years of ink, The Guardian is to become the first newspaper in the world to be published exclusively via Twitter, condensing all news stories and features into 'tweets'. Not content with publishing all new material using just 140 characters, The Guardian has also embarked on a mammoth project to rewrite the whole of the newspaper's archive, stretching back to 1821. For example: 'OMG Hitler invades Poland, allies declare war see tinyurl.com/b5x6e for more'; and 'JFK assassin8d @ Dallas, def. heard second gunshot from grassy knoll WTF?' Explanation:
First, a new truss was added. Then, new solar panels were installed. Now, as part of the planned upgrade of the International Space Station, an Expedition 18 astronaut has upgraded her own head. The Human Extended Analog Device 9000 was attached with only minor delays, making the astronaut's remaining spacewalks over 40 percent more efficient. With the HEAD 9000 attached, an astronaut can now directly access 4 Gigabytes of computer flash memory with their own brain, perform complex mathematics by "directed thinking", and play a pre-installed game of Tetris at no additional charge...
