Sen. Feinstein's Big Mouth

I think most people here assumed that despite Pakistan's official howls of protest that in reality the Pakistani government has been complicit in the frequent Predator strikes on Taliban and al Qaeda targets withing Pakistan. The protests were merely for Pakistani domestic consumption.

But at a Senate hearing yesterday Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D, People's Republic of Cahly-fornia) spilled the beans in public: not only was the Pakistani government complicit in the strikes, but the Predator drones were actually based inside Pakistan!
At a hearing, Feinstein expressed surprise over Pakistani opposition to the campaign of Predator-launched CIA missile strikes against Islamic extremist targets along Pakistan's northwestern border.

"As I understand it, these are flown out of a Pakistani base," she said.

The basing of the pilotless aircraft in Pakistan suggests a much deeper relationship with the United States on counter-terrorism matters than has been publicly acknowledged. Such an arrangement would be at odds with protests lodged by officials in Islamabad, the capital, and could inflame anti-American sentiment in the country.

The CIA declined to comment, but former U.S. intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information, confirmed that Feinstein's account was accurate.

Let's see, we have Patrick Lahey that never met a secret he didn't leak and Richard Shelby that blurted out the fact that we had a tap on Osama's satellite phone and now this. The enemy just needs to watch C-span and they get better intelligence than we do from the NSA and CIA.

And they said Bush was stupid. Isn't she like third in the line of succession?

Do any of you honestly believe that this info isn't commonly known to the involved parties, or that they didn't assume it anyhow?

Terrorist: "Wow, what a shock, I didn't think that was possible, thank you American freedom for informing me of things I'd have never known! Your politicians and journalists have destroyed your way of life foreverrrrr!!! Hah ha ha ha ha"

Things are bad in intelligence oversight. Feinstein replaced in that job the legendary boob and useful idiot, Jay Rockefeller, who in turn replaced the sycophant dedicated to providing cover to Bush/Cheney crimses, Pat Roberts. I hope that Feinstein runs for governor so that California can send someone with a little sense to fill that seat.

On the House side, things are no better. Sylvestre Reyes, the chair the House Intelligence committee, didn't seem to understand, upon assuming that position 2 years ago, the difference between Sunni and Shiite.

It's embarrassing that people in these incredibly important positions of power are such asshats as to not even realize they're not qualified, and step aside for someone who is.

That was my first reaction as well, but then I thought that perhaps the problem isn't that the people we're bombing didn't know already, but because we embarrassed Pakistan by publicly admitting their flimsy lies to be such. They were hoping to keep some plausible deniability going.

edit: spelling of "publicly". For some reason, I want to type "publically".

I think that would be a problem, except that I'm sure the Pakistani people are just as suspicious of their leaders as we are of ours.

Way, way more so. Consequently their governments tend to have a tenuous hold on power. Whatever interest the U.S. has in the stability of the current Pakistani government, that cause was just damaged. Feinstein ought to have her clearance revoked.

Still not following the argument. If the standard Pakistani attitude toward the "We don't comply with US requests" government line is "Yah right", then how could this really be so damaging? If I knew this stuff, and I did, why would this surprise anyone living in Pakistan?

Now the public can demand an explanation from D.F. for her talking out of school just as she demanded of Bush 43 regarding the Val Plame affair.

"The White House owes the American people an explanation. You shouldn't have to wait until there are indictments."

Yes, because the two situations are certainly equivalent.

Didn't you know the US was working our aims in Pakistan? As the OP said, "...most people here assumed..." ... but did you know a government agent's name before it was callously revealed to everyone? No.

Did I know Plame worked at the CIA prior to Novak's column? No. But if I followed her car from her home, I would know she drove to Langley every work day. Did the Russians know? Yes. Did Andrea Mitchell know? Yes. Did Aldrich Ames know? Yes.

The point is that the people who should not have known about Plame's CIA job, the opposition, knew long before Joe Six-Pack found out about it, if they read down to the sixth paragraph in Novak's column where Plame's name is mentioned.

Did I know positively that Predator Drones were based in Pakistan? No. Does it matter that I know now? Only if Pakistani citizens didn't know about this before D.F. opened her pie hole.

Did it matter that I found out about Plame long after that cat was out of the bag? No.
