Show trials for Bush Administration

It will be more like the Church Commission. Politicians will gather round and pore over documents. People will give testimony. Horrible crimes will be uncovered. More crimes will be uncovered. More crimes will be uncovered. Yet more crimes will be uncovered.

Then someone will say "well, they aren't in power anymore", and they will all walk.

And next Republican administration that rolls around, they will be right back at it. Indeed, many of the major players of the scandals surrounding the next Republican administration will be bit players from the Bush administration scandals. Several of the Bush administration scandals were crewed by familiar faces from Iran/Contra. And some of those guys were familiar faces from Nixon.

Slow down the investigations until your guy is out of office, then use the fact that he is out of office as a defense. The Republicans have that dance down cold.

Doesn't the term "truth and reconciliation commission" ring any bells with you? If Bush and crew have committed crimes then let the DOJ go after them as they would any private citizen. The Dems had their chance which was impeachment and didn't have the stones to do it.

But the Dems are not going to. It would be too "partisan". Far better politically for the Bushies to be left alone. Wouldn't want to spend any political capital on them.

Why, they will have learned their lesson, right? They wouldn't try to run roughshod over the constitution again, would they?

Its like finding out a rat has gottten into your house through a crack in the foundation. You search all over the basement, set up traps, put out bait, etc. Then, you finally corner it. You could smash it with a shovel, but you deside to be merciful. You are better than that.

You manage to scoop it into a paper bag and take it outside. You release it into the wild. Right outside your house. Right next to the crack in the foundation...

Yep, if you can't have show trials of political enemies then our constitution and republic are dead. Why not open each proceeding with 2 minutes of hate?

Oh, we'll have the show trials all right. And at the end, everyone will walk away as if nothing happened. Consequences are for people outside the Beltway.

Here's an idea. Limit the probe to Bush and Cheney and turn it over to Holder. I am positive he can impanel a grand jury in DC that would hand down indictments for all of the crimes democrats are so sure they committed. Indict them and go to trial. Let both sides call witnesses, present evidence and then get a verdict either way. It will eventually hit the USSC and their decision will set the precedent for future presidents and Vice-presidents actions in office. Of-course this is all predicated on whether the democrats actually have a prima facia case to begin with.

Hey, Holder already said during his confirmation hearings that waterboarding was torture. So there you have it. Open-and-shut. All you gotta do is prove Bush and Cheney knew of and approved of waterboarding, and you can slap the cuffs on 'em.

Agian, it would be too "partisan". Besides, the ability to tap into anybodys phone calls, have them dragged off the street and throw them in a dark hole to be tortured is really too cool for any President, Democrat or Republican, to give up.

Then I guess you don't really believe your own position that Bush and Cheney have committed serious crimes. The DOJ is there to prosecute federal crimes and if the evidence is there and they do nothing then Holder should resign. The fact is, the Lahey wants to grandstand and act like a Soviet Commissar tasked with humiliating political enemies.

Seems like a slam dunk to me of course then Pelosi and several other top Dems briefed repeatedly would be in the slammer too but then again......

THe following is exactlly why there will be no charges brought against anyone:

Yet long before "waterboarding" entered the public discourse, the CIA gave key legislative overseers about 30 private briefings, some of which included descriptions of that technique and other harsh interrogation methods, according to interviews with multiple U.S. officials with firsthand knowledge.

With one known exception, no formal objections were raised by the lawmakers briefed about the harsh methods during the two years in which waterboarding was employed, from 2002 to 2003, said Democrats and Republicans with direct knowledge of the matter. The lawmakers who held oversight roles during the period included Pelosi and Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) and Sens. Bob Graham (D-Fla.) and John D. Rockefeller IV (D-W.Va.), as well as Rep. Porter J. Goss (R-Fla.) and Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan).

Whoa there Bubba - what is this 'show trial' business?
Were crimes committed? If yes, prosecute. If no, publicize that fact. No more partisan crap. And about as exciting as watching paint dry.

Then have the DOJ investigate. The Congress had its chance with impeachment and that is the limit of their prosecutorial powers.

Who can argue against reconciliafication?

We are talking about Justice. If Bush and Cheney are indeed guilty of Treason and War Crimes then there is only one way to get justice and that is in a court of law. Show trials in Congress are a cop out and publicity stunt. If the Democrats have the goods, and they have unequivicaly asserted that they do, then they are equally guilty if they do not use the new DOJ to bring criminal charges. Treason is a capital offence so if Lahey is serious he needs to stop the grand standing and demand that Obama put the former POTUS and VPOTUS in the dock or just STFU.
