Pelosi: "500 Million Americans Lose Jobs Every Month"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8hMJVXt09E

Senile, or simply more hopelessly out of her increasingly limited depth than Paula Abdul at a Boolean algebra seminar? You make the call.:boggled:

Or the third (more likely) option: She mis-spoke and said "million" instead of "thousand". Whether or not you like or agree with Pelosi's policies, that clip seems like she made a simple mistake. I REALLY doubt she thinks that 500 million Americans lose their jobs every month.

Worth a giggle, but nothing more.

Seconded. Mis-speak, nothing more, and this is a rather mundane example. Actually, it's not uncommon among politicians to use the wrong word now and then.

Psshh. Once might (conceivably; just) be a "misspeak." Twice or more, however, and she's simply too slow to be driving in this particular lane.:eye-poppi

Just because it happens more than once doesn't mean it's not just a misspeak.

But what if a MP -- a well-respected one in her party -- writes that if the 9 nations that are located by the Baltic Sea each cut their seabound waste by 4%, we'll end up cutting the waste that flows to the Baltic Sea by 36%? And what if she then proceeds to use that as an example of how small actions can bring about ecologically significant results?

It sounds like one of those brain glitches, and she's destined to repeat the verbal slip-up because for some reason she's thinking "half a million", and trying to say "500 thousand" and merging the two together.

I do something similar with a co-worker's last name. I cannot, for the life of me, remember to use his correct name and instead merge it with the other guy's last name who sits beside him. And I've been working with these people for 10 years.

And I don't consider myself "slow", either.

I think, if you don't like speaker Pelosi, you should find some concrete examples of issues where you feel she's making wrong decisions, or some other "dirt" that holds up to better scrutiny. This is a non-event, sorry.

Perhaps not, but what do your co-workers think, particularly the one whose name you always screw up? :p

Well, she's a Democrat. That's prima facie evidence of senility or mental retardation right there...

And of course, if ChimpieBush had said it...

A measurably more reliable barometer, in this particular instance, would be to ask either/both of said co-workers their respective estimation(s), rather than relying on your doubtlessly more charitable own. ;)

More seriously, however: I very much doubt Pelosi considers herself "slow" either, so far as that goes. And that's really the problem right there in a nut shell, isn't it...?

Your opinion has been noted. I disagree with it.:D

Isn't anyone bothered by the real issue:
it looks like the 1/2 million job statistic is a real concern.

We could have 10% unemployment by end of year. 1 in 10 employable people in the US will be jobless as a result of this whole mess, and we're bickering if she stupid for saying million vs. thousand.

Er... I don't like her, but surely she just meant to say "500 thousand", not "500 million". I don't know if the former figure is true, mind you, but it's obviously her intent.

Here, it's predicted that 2 million more jobs will be lost in 2009
http://money.cnn.com/2009/01/30/news/economy/job_loss_roundup/index.htm

Thank you. Now, compare that very citation you've provided -- which (agree or disagree with it) is a demonstrably sober one, utilizing realistic numbers and percentages (i.e., a possible loss of two million jobs in the course of a single year) -- with Pelosi's hysterical and scatterbrained doomsday wail, re: "500 MILLION jobs every MONTH, OMG!!!!111!!!!!!";)

I watched a senate debate a few days ago where a TN Senator repeatedly referred to his distinguished friend from South Carolina, who in fact was from South Dakota. He didn't actually believe he was from SC, nor was he senile. Nobody got on his case for it either. The brain's language function isn't 100% reliable.

I would also imagine that in her daily conversations, Pelosi uses the word "million/s" a lot (what with budgets and all), and mentally grabbing for that numeric unit may have been force of habit. Even twice.

I would imagine these days she uses billions alot in her daily conversations.

And of course, if ChimpieBush had said it...

Even more pointed example: just imagine if (*gasp*) Sarah Palin had actually burbled anything even remotely along the studiedly imbecilic lines of "500 million Americans lose jobs every month," if you're really interested in conjuring up a prime example of Grade-"A," USDA-inspected hypocrisy on the hoof... ;)

Ok, you're both off my Christmas list :)

As for my co-workers, they just laugh it off as a quirk. And while I may have chuckled a few times at GWB's redneck-isms, they weren't nearly as relevant as his actual policy-making, so I chose to treat them as the trivia that they were.

If Speaker Pelosi actually believed there were 500 million unemployed last month, THAT I would have a problem with.

Nancy Pelosi obviously misspoke. Just like Bush 43 does. They are both smart people and neither of them should have obvious yet minor errors held against them.

I'd like to see a liberal acknowledge that.
