Eugenie C. Scott Tackles Bigfoot

Once, I went out hiking in the woods with some friends, in an area where bear are rare. Suddenly, I looked up and saw it...a bear! We all saw it! Right in front of us! Had we turned around and ran, I'm sure our story would have been: there's a bear in the forest, so lookout!

But we stopped and looked a little more carefully. It wasn't moving.

"Look, it's just a tree stump."

So we returned home, bearing a much less exciting story.

Hope this anecdote wasn't too much for you to bear.

Sherman, ok, but for every mistake some one makes, how many people are correct in seeing a bear?

Are you sure it was a tree stump? It might have been a bigfoot.

Neanderthal was a short hominid that looked nothing like a classical bigfoot. Giganthropithicus was a giant gorilla who walked on his knuckles. Nothing like the humanoid bi pedal creature that Bigfoot is supposed to be.

I'm not an anthropologist but its been my observation that Primates such as Gorillas, Chimpanzees, orangatangs ets are not that shy around humans. Bigfoot if it existed would actually benefit from contact with humans. Park rangers would feed them regularly as would tourists. Why hide from us.

I was in Florida once on a tour of a place where a Tarzan movie was made. The directors had brought along some small monkeys many of who escaped captivity. They are thriving there now. My point is this. Those little primates are in no way afraid of humans. The tourists feed them and they even come aboard the tourboats. Ok if those tiny promates are unafraid of humans why should a hugh creature like Bigfoot be afraid of us?

They hide from us because they know we want their "Poo."

Actually you make a good point there.

Peanut butter would be easier for them
to get if they bother us more often.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, much of the American / Canadian north was extensively exploited by hunters and trappers. Probably at no time before or since were so many humans working and living in a widely scattered area of the north.
(There are far more people there now, but they tend to be clustered).
The trappers were seriously experienced backwoods survival experts. They had to be.
They made a living supplying the HBC and others with pelts.

Now how much would a Bigfoot pelt have sold for in the days of Darwin , of Cope and Marsh?

If any such creature existed it would have been discovered then. It was not.

I seriously doubt it will be now.

Soapy, if bf remains were found, first thing would be "Ehh, probably human bones". Ever heard of the minaret skull?

Wheres the evidence that giganto was a quadraped? Theres definitely no way anyone could say this with out a body.

Modern technology ( properly applied by qualified people) could figure that out pretty quick

>>>Ever heard of the minaret skull?

If memory serves, it got "lost"? but didnt the people who looked at it ( anthropologists IIRC) determine it was from a NA male?

>>>Wheres the evidence that giganto was a quadraped? Theres definitely no way anyone could say this with out a body

Its in the same drawer that all the "bigfoot" evidence is in that has been attributed to it without a body as well.

Perhaps you missed the point of my unbearable story.

It was: observations hastily made, generated by preconceived notions, group pressures, suggestions and possibly wishful thinking, can be highly unreliable, even if all people in a group agree 100%.

Had we turned tail, it would remain a bear in all of our minds to this day. But we did not. We paused, then investigated a little more carefully and shortly came to the conclusion that it was a harmless tree stump.

Not all snap observations are adequately followed up to this extent, and even though a bear wouldn't be impossible in that country, a bigfoot is in a different category. More care than bear is necessary when facts are on the line.

And then they would just walk on by. Bye bye bye. Human bones. Neato. Moving on, things to do. Nobody really cares about paying attention when you find human bones.

So why cant it be possible for people to be correct in seeing a bf?

Mak, you need to be a little less trollish and a little more factual- this isnt the BFF

Nobody here has said it isnt "possible" just highly unlikely and even if they did see a BF there isnt any reliable evidence ( as of yet) known to exist to shore up the claim
