I agree with your post and your point, but I was using unthinkable to refer to the action, not the idea. For example, prior to 9/11, I had a chance to "fly" a full 727 simulator at Purdue. We were practicing a take-off from SFO, and the person in the pilot's seat (I was the co-pilot) suggested we go and "lawn-dart downtown San Francisco". It was funny at the time mostly because although the idea was thinkable, actually carrying it out was completely unthinkable, or, as you say, unbelievable.

No one I know (or at least, no one I would care to know) would make such a joke these days.
 
In the US you had not lived with the spectre of domestic terrorism to the same extent as many European countries. McVey was a rare blip, and it was not unreasonable for you all to be unware of how much of a target you might actually be.

At one time it was unthinkable that the IRA might have managed to bomb a hotel hosting the Conservative Party conference. Or fire mortar shells at Downing Street. Did you know that all court buildings and police stations in the UK have required to incorporate bomb-proof measures since the 1970s?

Would any of us have believed that terrorists (albeit probably state sponsored) would have taken out an entire 747 above our country, killing over 200 people both in the air and on the ground?

The consequence is that the US public has, on the face of it, never had to face the realism of such events up close. Putting a couple of bucks in a tin to help the struggle in the "old country", unaware of what that really meant, all whilst drinking a pint of Guiness might have been as close as some got.

Do I think US airline security was a joke before 911? Yes. Do I think you should have been more aware of the risks posed by both domestic and non-domestic groups? Yes, but I ackowledge your security services may have (should have?) been doing something. Can I understand this attitude? Yes, unfortunately I can.

When I served in the gulf war I was put on guard duty with US servicemen and Saudi miltary. They did not have clue about guarding against a terrorist threat at this time because it was not a big threat to them whereas here in the UK we had the Irish troubles for years.
 
Speaking of the gulf war, why didnt the arabs use/have suicide bombers then to fight the infidels? What advice did you give those servicemen?

What? Are you serious with this? The answer to that is quite simply that Iraq was not a quasi-religious sectarian poopstorm like it is now. Saddam repressed fundamentalist Islam along with everything else he considered a threat to his power with a very heavy hand.

Of course, you could make the argument that Saddam actually attempting an armed conventional war against the U.S. military WAS a suicide attack of sorts.

The Iranians, on the other hand, did use suicide tactics during the Iran/Iraq war. Or rather, they had a couple hundred children do it for them.

Suicide bombers aren't very effective against modern militaries, for obvious reasons. Besides, Saddam had an army and air force of his own, so he never had to resort to such crude methods in the first place, nor would he have easily been able to recruit suicide bombers since he wasn't an extremist of any sort. Just your typical tin-pot dictator.

Who knows. Maybe the fact that the Baathists were and are a non-sectarian party had something to do with it. The fact is that until late 2003, there had never been an Iraqi suicide bomber anywhere.

Did the Iranians ever use suicide bombers, though? From what I understand, the Basij units (which largely comprised children) were used for human wave attacks and sometimes mine-clearing.

We had lots of bomb threats in NYC in the early 70s. According to the excellent book, bomb squad by Esposito, the NYC bomb squad
responded to calls for 3335 incendiary devices and 975 explosive devises between Jan. 69 - Apr. 70, many were false alarms, many were not.

Aside from IRA reports, my first memories are of Quebec seperatists putting bombs in mail boxes. ISTR that hapened lots of times.

Believe me, mate, you don't want to know what it was like here at the height of the Troubles. We're not talking blowing up post boxes, we're talking armed attacks on police stations, sniper attacks on soliders, mortar attacks on just about everything, letter bombs, car bombs, chip shop bombings, the lot.

The Saudis would kill them. I guess suicide bombers and shooters are chicken and run away from massed troops.

Where would you blow up American troops in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf war? They were out in the desert all by themselves.

There was one guy who tried to kill some American troops; he was killed the next day. I guess the worst thing you can do is fail to do your mission and be killed for trying; no reward in hell with the 72 Virginians.

The next big attempt came after the Gulf war in 96 (albeit there were always car bombs going off near, or attempts at American troops- you do not do research on this or 9/11, but you like turtles; wow) when a bomb about 20,000 ton of TNT killed 19 Americans. Research is the key you are missing to unlocking the truth and you should find it before making statements on topics like this and 9/11.

OBL volunteered to bring his jihadists from Afghanistan to fight AGAINST Saddam.

Anyone with any brain cells would take this fact and deduce that therefore Saddam was therefore the ENEMY of any group of Arabs that would employ suicide bombings.
