Sid Ryan, President of the Ontario chapter of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, has proposed a ban on Israeli professors from teaching unless they "explicitly condemn the university bombing and the assault on Gaza in general".

"In response to an appeal from the Palestinian Federation of Unions of University Professors and Employees, we are ready to say Israeli academics should not be on our campuses unless they explicitly condemn the university bombing and the assault on Gaza in general," said Sid Ryan, president of CUPE Ontario.

What a great day when a union leader makes a move to limit free speech. Isn't that what a University atmosphere is supposed to promote?

I'm sure there's a similar call to ban all Muslim professors, unless they explicitly condemn Al Queda and all other Islamist terrorist organizations. And all Communist professors, unless they explicitly condemn Stalin's actions. And all American professors, unless the explicitly condemn...

...oh wait.

But remember, this has nothing at all to do with anti-semitism or support for Hamas.

If only...

Of course not!

PS: I flew that flag in your sig during the 2006 war with Hizb'allah! :D

I call for a ban on all Canadians unless they specifically condemn the actions of CUPE.

I'm looking at you, William Shatner.

This actually seems to have been greeted with varying degrees of hilarity here in Ontario. It's Sid Ryan for Pete's sake.

Public employee unions -- millions who work for bosses they can vote out if they cut pay.

Quite frankly, it's a conflict of interest -- on both sides of the equation. And one that would get you jailed in any other field.

I would support a constitutional amendment(or a constitution and an amendment, as the case may be) that forced any job offered by the government to require giving up your right to vote if you take it, thru six months after you quit.

Don't like it? Don't take the job.

I hope you trust the 6 guys with a collective IQ of 8 who would form the military under your plan.

There's a reason why 90% of our population's massed along your northern border.

It's called "The First Wave".

Alternatively, it can be "Wanting to immigrate but did not get a visa", or more realistically, "Trying to escape the cold". :p

What's Sid Ryan going to do after this: http://www.gmanews.tv/story/143825/UN-rights-body-condemns-Israel-over-Gaza

Associated Press said:
GENEVA — The top UN rights body has approved a resolution condemning Israel's military offensive in Gaza saying it has "resulted in massive violations of human rights of the Palestinian people."

The Human Rights Council's 47 members voted 33 in favor and 1 against the resolution that also accuses Israel of systematically destroying Palestinian infrastructure and of targeting civilians and medical facilities.

European Union countries abstained and Canada voted against the resolution.

Some 870 Palestinians have died since Israel launched its offensive on Dec. 27 in response to Hamas rocket attacks.

The resolution approved in Geneva Monday urges an end to the rocket attacks but mentions neither Hamas nor violations of Israeli civilians' rights.

Sid Ryan will have to ban all Canadians.

Which is why Europe abstained and other nations voted against it.
That Europe abstained comes as a surprise. I thought they would have voted for it.

I, for one, would be quite interested to know what the rank-and-file membership of CUPE thinks of what its president is proposing. I suspect most would want him to spend more time focusing on the negotiating of collective bargaining agreements and other issues directly related to the union membership and less time focusing on international politics.

Of course, perhaps I'm mistaken in that assessment. If there are any CUPE members who post here, please feel free to offer your views on the matter.
