How many years of these attacks has Israel had, to perfect a system whereby the second a rocket is launched, instant retribution would be delivered?

If the rabbits knew everytime they popped their head out of the burrow, that nasty fox was going to bite it off, they would have soon learned.

The tech to do that has been around for well over a decade, with some new advances in overhead surveillance and C2 methods making it far more practical then even ten years ago.

The political will to do it is nearly absent. From what I read in the news, hard to say how accurate that is, a response something like what you suggest was made in a return fire mission into Lebanon shortly after rockets struck into northern Israel within the last few days.

So while we're on the topic of Hamas and civilian casualties, has anyone been able to dig up the truth on this incident? Is this as it seems, or is it analogous to the recent school incident?

I heard this reported this morning.

The useful idiots will claim that Israel deliberately massacred Palestinian civilians

The useless geniuses will claim that it was a legitimate military target because an unidentified IDF spokesman is rumored to have reported that a suspected Hamas member was seen in the vicinity at some point in the last month.

The truth will never be known, but probably involves one part of the Israeli military not knowing what another part was doing, much like the recent friendly fire deaths.

The reasoning power that the safety, and in reality the deaths, of 30 innocent civilians are worthy sacrifices for the greater good when it was a couple of hamas fighters shooting at the IDF is not reasonable reasoning power.

The Palestinian use of human shields to protect armed gunmen and rocket launching crews from Israeli responses is a widespread but largely unreported aspect of this conflict. On November 2, amidst the ongoing warfare in Gaza, armed Palestinians entered a mosque in Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza, to escape from IDF units. A standoff developed and on November 3, Hamas broadcast a radio appeal for women to go to the mosque and act as human shields for the gunmen. Hundreds of women then went to the mosque, providing cover for the gunmen to escape. At least two gunmen and two women acting as human shields were killed. Ismail Haniyeh, the Palestinian Prime Minister "saluted the women of Palestine ... who led the protest to break the siege of Beit Hanoun."

The use of human shields contravenes Protocol I (1977) to the Geneva Convention, article 51 (7), which states that "the parties shall not direct the movement of the civilian population or individual civilians in order to attempt to shield military objectives from attacks or to shield military operations."

Neither Human Rights Watch nor Amnesty International has commented on this abuse of international law, (as of November 8). Other international NGOs such as the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), Christian Aid and Oxfam have also failed to comment on this use of human shields.

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) which states that its goal is to "protect human rights and promote the rule of law in accordance with international standards," did not condemn Hamas' use of human-shields. Instead, PCHR accused Israel of conducting "state-sponsored terrorism" in its press release of November 4, called the IDF actions "collective punishment in violation of article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention" and condemned the IDF for not using "proportional" force "against Palestinian resistance activists in civilian neighborhoods." The statement also misrepresented events of November 3 stating that "a group of about 300 women...organized a demonstration and headed to Beit Hanoun", implying that it was a spontaneous action not coordinated by Hamas.

I realise there are a lot of logistical problems in running an 139 sq mile prison, but still.

I don't think this would actually be feasible. It would require a 24/7 CAP and surveillance mission over the entirety of Palestine and southern Lebanon, with standing orders to fire at will.

The whole premise of this thread is stupid. Hamas isn't fighting for matchsticks. They're serious about their goal. Civilian lives are always part of the toolchest when you're serious. The problem with the West is that it largely can't stomach the thought of this truism. Israel's quandary is that it depends on on the wishy washy West (mostly the US) for lots of it's goodies and reassurance. So even if it wanted to engage in some gool old fashioned annihilation, they have to pull their punches to appease their Western brothers.

The suggestion was that the Palestinian refugees should settle in Palestine.

The Palestinians would be quite happy with that, as long as they got to draw the map of Palestine.

They're picky about that sort of thing. There are still Palestinians who think that Palestine ought to be in the place they lived back when they lived in Palestine.

And trying to convince someone that it's ok to throw him out of his home because someone else threw somebody else out of that person's home is never an easy thing to sell. Explaining to an Arab that he can't live where he used to live, or where his father used to live, because the guy who lives there now used to live in Iraq but was thrown out, just isn't going to work well.
