I'm all for gun control

Hi

Very weak argument! Can you furnish us with some examples? Does not hold a candle to the other side of the coin such as the recent shoot out in Toys R Us.

Let's see: Can I furnish, "some," examples to answer ONE example of a couple of hoods duking it out in public....

Security guard who stopped shooter credits God

About 12 hours later, police say, Murray showed up at New Life Church as a service was letting out.

Police said Monday he had an assault rifle and two handguns, and may have had as many as 1,000 rounds of ammunition.

He fired on a family who were in or near their car. Two sisters, identified by police as Rachael Works, 16, and Stephanie Works, 18, were killed, and their father, David Works, 51, was also shot and is hospitalized in fair condition with two gunshot wounds.

....

Murray then entered the church, police say, where Assam was one of several volunteer security guards on duty.

"I saw him coming through the doors," she told reporters on Monday. "I took cover, and I waited for him to get closer, and I came out of cover and identified myself, and engaged him, and took him down. And that's pretty much it."

....

Hey! A volunteer security guard! That's exactly what I am!!!

St. Louis Today said:
An intended rape victim shot and killed her attacker this morning in Cape Girardeau when he broke into her home to rape her a second time, police said.

The 57-year-old woman shot Ronnie W. Preyer, 47, a registered sex offender, in the chest with a shotgun when he broke through her locked basement door.

The woman told police he was the same man who raped her several days earlier. Officials do not intend to seek charges against her.

Just in answer to those, "how many times does someone break into an occupied home," arguments. Once is plenty, thanks.

This stuff is hard to find. It shows up for one day in the, "feel-good," news and subsequently disappears into the news business's can't-make-a-nickle-on-it files.

On the other hand, you'll be hearing about those two jackassulant Toys 'Я' Us boobs for weeks.

Why? Because people will tune in and sit through advertising to see the next piece of analysis of it.

TV is neither an entertainment nor a news medium. It's an ADVERTISING medium.

Aha, thank you Gagglenash. From your post I was able to figure out what I was doing incorrectly while using the JREF protocol codes. The link as I wanted it to be is to the same article that you cited but comes from a group that keeps track of and publishs information about the media. Trying again because I think that the anti-firearms people need to get some grasp why they do not see many articles about the law abiding use of firearms to stop or prevent a crime.

Gun Rights Forces Outgunned on TV

Well, I guess then, a new daffynition...

"Troll: That which exposed my jerking knee"

Actually that's the definition of the Internet.

Fishing for said responses is exactly what "trolling" is. It's not based on the little ugly people who live under bridges, it's based on the kind of trolling that requires those little 1 hp motors on fishing boats.

Hey, I know. Instead of penalizing people who drive while intoxicated, let's ban automobiles entirely. Think of the children!

200 people a year die of an aspirin overdose. HOW LONG WILL WE ALLOW THE TYRANNY OF BAYER TO KEEP US LIVING IN FEAR??!!

Comparing guns and cars is apples to oranges. Most Americans need their cars to survive. Virtually every American private citizen does not need a gun to survive. Or do you drive your gun to work? Perhaps I'm missing something.

So we're deciding on natural rights based on need now.

Why don't you discuss natural rights and need with the dead kids parents. What was the last thing you needed a gun for that wasn't based in wanting to use a gun as opposed to needing to use a gun?

Oh goody. Appeals to emotion. They carry so much weight on boards promoting critical thinking.

ETA: Man I'm uncivil today. Removed the bad part before I get in trouble. :o

Well fortunately intrepretation of he Constitution is not based what you perceive as my need.

In the case you called our attention to there was extremely poor judgement demonstrated and IMO the people responsible are indeed due for some prosecution. Their poor judgement however is no reason to restrict the recreational activity of others who are in no way involved.

Exactly. A parent leaves prescription drugs where a child can get them, or puts them on an ATV without a helmet, or takes them to the zoo and lets them hang over the rail of the polar bear cage it's nothing but poor judgment on behalf of the parents.

I also wouldn't have a problem with some sort of punishment, but I guarantee you nothing you could do to the father right now could come close to comparing to what he's going through dealing with the loss of a child due to his negligence.

And to somehow attempt to shift the blame to the gun is... for want of a better word but I've already been scolded tonight... ridiculous.

Lesse... ummm... the three gun fights I've been in where I used a rifle and a pistol to help myself and the people with me stay alive during an armed attack.

Yeah - I think that's about right.

I suppose I could have called the police, but since I was in Vietnam I suspect their response time would have been prohibitively long.

Maybe I should have just filed for a restraining order....

I do have one problem with your position, Crowlogic: Why are you more concerned about the very large number of firearms owners who are law-abiding and careful about storage and handling of their firearms, and hence who are not shooting at you or endangering their kids, than you are about the very small minority of law-breaking and otherwise jackassulating firearms owners who are shooting at you and being stupid with their firearms?

OK, bless those who have and still hold the positions they do, but on a forum where we had a thread suggesting meat-eaters should view scenes from a slaughterhouse to grasp why some are so opposed to it, I must ask those who are vehemently anti-second amendment one question:

"Have you ever fired a gun?"

I'm not placing blame on the media or saying anyone's been brainwashed or anything, but there is a LOT of irrational, fear-based information being peddled about guns by and to people who as a result would be less scared to grasp a cactus than a pistol.

And I get that. So I don't ask the question in any sort of elitist way, but out of curiosity based on first-person experiece.

The guy I go shooting with these days is in his late 40s, and this time last year he'd not only never fired a handgun, but was (not rabidly, but at least moderately) "anti-gun."

Then I took him shooting.

In addition to being a bit of a hippie, he's also a pretty good machinist and designer. He was immediately struck the mechanics of my Glock, the simplicity yet brilliance of its design (the fact he was a natural and was shooting better than me by the end of his first day didn't hurt. Jerk!). Between that, and sitting through and taking in the good two hours of safety lessons I gave him before he was ever so much as handed a loaded gun, he developed an understanding and appreciation for firearms as what they are:

Tools.

Tools that, like most other tools, are safe in the hands of those who respect their power, and incredibly dangerous when being handled by those who don't.

It's not his views of society or attitudes that have changed, but last time we went to the range he took me aside and reflected on how much the sight of a firearm used to send a shiver down his spine, and how now he's much more interested in why a certain model costs more than another and whether it's based on name value or craftsmanship.

And he's STILL a better shot than me. I might not let him fire the .22 I'm getting for Christmas. Jerk!

You realise that shooting any native animal in Queensland without the proper consents is illegal and can land you in jail for 2 years per count?
