Does a Global Temperature Exist?

That sounds like a basic question...but the paper is meaningless in the context of global warming. Increasing CO2 adds a positive bias to all temperatures across the globe, so it doesn't matter what method you pick to take the Earth's temperature. This bias will still come through.

You can find more info all over the Itubez critical of this paper. Here's one. Here's another, from the JREF forums in 2007.

The truth will set you free, said the Philosopher. And in the end Mhaze will be vindicated.

While tempted to go with Planet X, I'm going to go with the option just above that. Although I am taking this as an OPINION poll at this time.

What I don't understand though is the people who vehemently deny any Climate Change... Do they want to keep doing everything just like they have always done? Come on, even those folks should at least know that any pollution is just that, POLLUTION. Generally not good (you know, like smoking). Or do they like to use the whole world as their personal toilet?

If that is the case (and I am genuinely asking that) why are there so many who believe this is not the case?

Here is a nice video by science historian Naomi Oreskes that explores that very topic.

What are the strongest items of evidence they claim counters this and why are they incorrect? Previous threads on the subject appear to degenerate into Ad Homs far too quickly (on both sides) and sources are attacked rather than the data presented.

In the published literature there is virtually no counter evidence. The rare time a contrarian paper gets published it’s usually an attempt to expand the error bands, and even these are generally refuted and are certainly not used as the basis of any ongoing work.

The only two contrarian papers I can think of form the last couple years Douglass’s flawed paper on troposphere trends in the tropics which has been extensively refuted in the peer reviewed literature. The other is Singers paper that roughly say “there may be enough error in cloud behavior to explain current warming”. He doesn’t attempt to quantify this error, though, and if it really does provide a strong negative feedback he has tried to imply in his non-peer reviewed references to it, it would mean any type of warming would be impossible. Since we know that it does warm substantially at the end of ice ages this seems very unlikely.

Wowbagger: the UK Met-office has some interesting stuff:

there are some slightly unclear bits, but some pretty clear stuff:

I won't hotlink because they don't like that but:

Fact 4
Recent warming cannot be explained by the Sun or natural factors alone for example
Shows a graph of solar activity and implied temperature changes...

<snip>
Over the last 1,000 years most of the variability can probably be explained by cooling due to major volcanic eruptions and changes in solar heating.

In the 20th century the situation becomes more complicated. There is some evidence that increases in solar heating may have led to some warming early in the 20th century, but direct satellite measurements show no appreciable change in solar heating over the last three decades. Three major volcanic eruptions in 1963, 1982 and 1991 led to short periods of cooling. Throughout the century, CO2 increased steadily and has been shown to be responsible for most of the warming in the second half of the century.

<snip>
ETA:
Changes in solar activity do affect global temperatures, but research shows that, over the last 50 years, increased greenhouse gas concentrations have a much greater effect than changes in the Sun's energy.

For those that want to say, "Well, Mars and Pluto are getting warmer, and since the only thing in common between the three is the sun, the sun must be causing it." should look up the Inverse Square law. ;) Just saying!

Are there any good sites anyone can recommend, for dispelling GW myths, and promoting the actual science? Something like TalkOrigins, but for Climatology, perhaps?

The real problem is that Global Warming has become so loaded down with politics.
Let's face it, some on the Left are using Global Warming as a took for attacking their Great Satan, the Free Market system, and for that very reason some on the right are saying it is all a myth and a left wing plot.
