Ugly Buildings

I always thought the new Bio5 research building here in Tucson was ugly.

If you notice, the windows are actually angled from the side of the building, and there never has been an explanation for the weird white thing in front. I suppose it is for aesthetic purposes, but what do scientists need with aesthetics?

Also, on the near side, those are copper tiles, so they will patina rather quickly.

ETA: Didn't realize the picture was so large. Sorry.

:( can't find a pic of the University of Iowa Dental Science Building. It's a low, ugly chunk of concrete. I remarked once that it looked like a molar. Found out later it was supposed to look like a molar!! At least, that's what I remember...

On my own hate list, the New De Young Art Museum in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco is hideous. It has been nicked named "The Aircraft Carrier" because of the wierd placing of the observation tower, but I consider that to be a unfair insult to aircraft carriers.

The Photo does not do it true ugliness justice.

Gotta be honest with you, I like the New De Young Museum. Especially good inside, and not too shabby outside either.

The Humanities building at UW-Madison was always a little ominous...like the Apocalypse was right around the corner.

The George L. Mosse Humanities Building, located on Library Mall, was built in the late 1960s in the Brutalist style. Campus myth has it that the building (with its poor ventilation, narrow windows, inclined base, and cantilevered upper floors) was designed to be "riot-proof" in that it was inescapable by protestors and easily penetratable by a SWAT Team. Its seven floors house the History, Art, and Music departments. The most recent Campus Master Plan calls for it to be demolished and replaced with two other buildings.

While I'm on the subject of UW-Madison buildings, the Red Gym certainly has an...interesting design. Locally known as "Bowser's Castle".

Its debatable whether it is better or worse than the buildings that were there before.

Have to disagree with you and Damien about Fed Square. Remember there were a lot of people who thought the Opera House was crap originally. I think Fed Square will be thought a classic in years to come. And, like the Opera House, it replaced an eyesore.

Fixed that for you:D

I've been there - it's a railway switchyard in Switzerland - Basel, maybe? It's been several years. I remember my architecture professor pointed it out to me, and I thought, "what's so special about that?"

exactly, that is it, it is in Basel and it is a switchyard.

the special thing i guess would be the cladding. Its copper and where there are windows behind it, the cladding is 45° twisted, so a little sunlight can enter the building.
