Famous film of Bigfoot: Big hoax?

Special to the Gazette

A Kalamazoo native's story helps to debunk the myth of Bigfoot tomorrow on TV Land.

It was 1967 when costume-maker Philip Morris got an unusual phone call from a guy asking about a gorilla costume. ``We had been advertising our costumes in a lot of trade magazines, so I was used to getting phone calls, but this was different,'' said Morris, whose costume company Morris Costumes in Charlotte, N.C., is one of the largest in the nation.

``The man on the phone, who said his name was Roger Patterson, wanted to buy a gorilla suit and asked if it looked like a real gorilla,'' said Morris, a Kalamazoo Central graduate. ``I told him that it looked like a Hollywood gorilla, but he said he wanted something that looked more like a Neanderthal. What he wanted was Bigfoot.''

Intrigued, Morris asked Patterson what the costume was for. ``He said the costume was for a prank, but I thought that was pretty odd because these were expensive suits,'' said Morris. ``Our customers were movie studios and famous magicians, the suits cost $450 back then. That is like over $1,000 today. I thought it was odd to spend so much on a prank, but I sent him the costume.''

Two weeks after sending out the costume, Morris got another phone call from Patterson. ``He asked me to send him some extra fur and asked how to hide the zipper in the back and how to make the person in the costume look larger,'' Morris said. ``I told him to brush the fur over the zipper and use hair spray to hold it, and then get some football shoulder pads and sticks for the arms to give the illusion of being taller, and use stuffing to get more bulk.''

Two months later, Patterson was all over the news with a video he ``captured'' of Bigfoot while hunting in northern California. ``I was watching TV when I saw Patterson and his film on the news,'' Morris said. ``I called my wife from the other room and said, `Look it's our gorilla costume.'''

The film has since become the most famous footage of Bigfoot and has ignited a controversy over its authenticity. With a large clientele of magicians, Morris decided not to tell anyone that it was his gorilla costume in the film.

``As a costume and special-effects producer, I have an ethical code I have to uphold,'' Morris said. ``I couldn't go out telling secrets and expect magicians to trust me with their props. That is why I didn't say anything. Plus I thought he would come clean in a few weeks.''

Patterson never admitted it was a hoax, but after his death in the 1980s Morris decided it was OK to tell people it was his suit in the film.

``Most people believe me, but there are people that are very hostile to me when I tell them it is a hoax,'' Morris said. ``It is like telling them Santa Claus doesn't exist. They grew up believing it was true and do not want to admit to themselves it's fake.''

Very interesting. If I had more time, I'd type out the text that I can just barely read for those who can't. Maybe later. Looks like basically a televization of the Heironimus/Morris/Long angle. I remain skeptical of Philip Morriss' involvement.

I saw the postings about this on BFF and BFD today. It looks like Philip Morris is producing this. I'm curious if there is anything new in this, or if it is old stuff that is repackaged. There are errors in the advertisement and news article.

Here is a better version of the ad that is easier to read.

I think it's only a 30 minute program and there are 2 or 3 other segments so the bigfoot portion will take all of 7 minutes or so.

ETA:
BIGFOOT, PHONE HOME
Did a well known household detergent feature young Marilyn Chambers on its box prior to her rise to fame as an adult film actress? Did Mars Inc., the maker of M&M candies, really turn down product placement in the 1982 hit E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial, paving the way for Reese's Pieces to cash in on E.T.’s success? Was Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones murdered? Is the famous Bigfoot film a hoax?

This could be nothing more than selected scenes from the already-shown National Geographic "Is It Real?".

What could be significant, is that they may show the footage of BH walking in the Morris costume. This was shown in the NG program, but nobody seems to have a streaming clip of it on the web (YouTube, etc). The best we have is a clip composed of several still frames (I think Darkwing did this) - but it is crummy. This new program may give folks the opportunity to put the full BH walk on the web.

Then the BH believer vs skeptic war starts all over again! :D

I remain skeptical of Philip Morriss' involvement.

I remain unconvinced of any Morris or Heironimus involvement in the PGF.

KK - PGF a hoax. Heironimus involved, Morris not.

LTC - PGF a hoax. Neither Heironimus nor Morris involved.

WP - PGF a hoax. Heironimus and Morris involved.

Clearly this difference of opinions indicates the PGF is real.:D

I was quite amused that they made constant use of the "Bob Gimlin in a wig" picture and highlighted "rogerfoot."

For some odd reason, the version of the PGF they used had the color removed and the footage they had of Bob H (not in costume) doing the Patty walk seemed like it came from an old, worn VHS. The footage of Greg Long, Bob H., and Philip Morris appears to be new and they didn't use any of the recreation footage. The only other thing worthy of note was the claim that MK Davis spent years working in the film. Speaking of which, Mr. Davis gave his "wild human" hypothesis during his brief segment.

I'll give Morris credit, though...his Bigfoot suit looks pretty good in the view shown on the fifth picture at the bottom of that publicity flier. Speaking of which, the one hour running time and on-air lie detector test promised on the flier never happened.

The impression I got from the segment was that the person given the job of putting it together had an, "Are you kidding me? You're making me do the bigfoot segment?, This blows!!!!" attitude towards the whole thing.

For example, why have MK Davis' hair braid clip idea in it? It is such an outlandish idea that presenting it seemed to serve no purpose other than to paint bigfoot 'scientists' in a bad light.

Was the director/producer/whatever trying to find the dumbest bigfoot belief from a 'respected' member of the bigfoot community to show that anyone who believes is as crazy as this respected scientist, but at the same time allowing equal time for both sides?

Poorly, poorly put together.

So it was just about selling the show and making a profit then?

Par for the bigfoot "researcher" course...

I suppose no one took the trouble to do any porcine tossing distance experiments while they were at it?

Thanks, Atomic, for that link.

1. What is the blurry Bigfoot photo at 00:33, 1:07, and 5:26? I've never seen it before and I thought I've seen everything.

2. Wil Wheaton, are you an incognito JREF Bigfoot skeptic?

3. Once again, Heironimus' walk is a dead ringer for Patty.

4. MK Davis on the PGF: "This should not even be a Bigfoot issue." :D

Atomic, did you find that link at the BFF? I went looking in the general discussion and PGF sections but couldn't find a thread on it. All I got for my troubles was finding a thread entitled "Do Sasquatch Domesticate Moose?" in general discussion that was locked from public view. BFF doesn't like it when their crazy hangs out.

Atomic, did you find that link at the BFF?

I found it in this thread over in the "Film, Video, Photo & Audio Discussion" section. Personally, I think it should've gone in the "TV, Radio & Documentaries" subforum of their "Media" section.

Yeah, I was wondering about that myself. It seems to have breasts...I wonder if it's an overheard view of the Morris suit?
